RAY OF HOPE is currently seeking an ADDICTION COUNSELLOR for our Youth Support Services, Day Treatment Program.

Overview

The Addiction Counsellor works directly with youth in the day treatment program. The incumbent will provide individual counselling and psychotherapy, within your scope of practice1, as well as psychoeducation and psychotherapeutic group work to participants in the context of a harm reduction milieu. Will also provide leadership to life skills training, plans & participates in recreational, community service and some educational activities. Administrative responsibilities as required by Program Manager or Director. The incumbent may also be required to support the Community Treatment team during school breaks and or low number of participants in Day Treatment.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Implement individual interventions and group programs developed by the treatment team:
  • Collaborate with participants to generate participant-centred, strength-based, forward thinking change strategies, reflecting evidenced based practices and individual scope of clinical practice
  • Actively participate in service plan development for each participant to ensure professional service delivery
  • Provide individual and group counselling, psychotherapy and life skills coaching to all participants as needed
  • Specific, as assigned, participant functions include:
  • Taking the lead in moving the individual aspects of treatment forward
  • Preparation and/or participation in service planning meetings
  • Support participants in crisis and safety planning
  • Develop discharge plans in consultation with participants, their families and other professional supporters
  • Develop crisis and safety plans, independently and in consultation with the manager, and oversee their implementation
  • Develop and co-facilitate psychotherapy and psycho-educational groups, as well as life skills training, in consultation with program manager

General Program Responsibilities

  • Consult regularly with the program manager regarding participants’ progress and actively participate in clinical supervision
  • Respond to client requests and crises in a responsible, timely and flexible manner
  • Collaborate with WRDSB teacher to ensure treatment expectations/needs of youth are met along with academic requirements
  • Develop and participate in recreational activities with participants
  • Supervise participants in all activities
  • Fulfill shift lead/ERL duties as assigned, and in accordance to YAS policies and procedures
  • Assist program manager with Placement Student activities and learning goals as required
  • Maintain current and accurate confidential records in participant files, incident reports, and other required documentation
  • Supervise medication use by participants, and document all medication use and other related medical issues
  • Participate with all other staff in maintaining the safety & security of the program area (i.e. day treatment space and appropriate use of the rest of the building), which includes, but is not limited to:
  • Safe handling of keys
  • Regular security and safety checks
  • Following policies and procedures
  • Modeling responsible behaviour at all times
  • Complete regular program related duties and routines as required to have an effective, efficient daily plan, including:
  • Oversee and train participants in completing tasks related to keeping the facility clean and preparing food
  • Directly participate and assist in maintaining the overall cleanliness of the facility and directly participate in food preparation when needed
  • Follow the policies and procedures of YAS and ROH, and consult with the program manager as needed
  • Assist program director in the on-going process of developing and implementing program policies and procedures
  • Participate in first contact/intake process as needed
  • Other duties as assigned by the program manager and director.

Professional Development

  • Participate in ongoing professional development activities and engage in reciprocal relationships of learning with colleagues to stay current in the field
  • Participate in regular individual and team supervision meetings
  • Implement related learning and professional development plans as discussed with managers
  • Maintain professional credentialing, certification and continuing education requirements, on own initiative and in conjunction with organizational resources were available

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor degree in a field relevant to psychotherapy plus 2 years of youth and addiction experience, or
  • College diploma (two or three years/post-diploma) in a field relevant to psychotherapy (i.e., Addiction Counselling, Child & Youth Work, Social Service Worker) and two years of youth and addiction experience.
  • Member in good standing of an appropriate regulatory body that provides access to the Controlled Act of Psychotherapy (i.e., CRPO, OCSWSSW, etc.)

Experience

  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience in providing treatment to individuals (youth preferred) related to addiction and/or trauma or moderate mental health challenges.

Certifications

  • Standard First Aid and CPR Level C +AED
  • Crisis intervention technique training NVCI
  • Safe Food Handling is an asset

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities to be successful in this position

  • Demonstrated knowledge of facility protocols
  • Demonstrated knowledge of treatment methods related to addiction, trauma, and mild to moderate mental health
  • Demonstrated ability to prevent and/or manage aggressive behaviours and crises through various means
  • Demonstrated ability in using Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Proven ability to identify and manage group dynamics and facilitate group process, both psychotherapy and life skill types
  • Proven ability to organize, implement, and deliver social, recreational, and skills programs
  • Demonstrated knowledge of legislation and rights as they apply to youth in the program
  • Demonstrated knowledge and implementation of the facility mission, philosophy, and policies and procedures
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Children’s Service System
  • High level of empathy and listening skills
  • Ability to manage workload and give priority to task
  • Ability to interpret and implement organizational policies and procedures

Requirements

  • Vulnerable Sector Check/Police Check
  • Valid, unrestricted Class “G” Driver’s licence
  • Ministry of Transportation Drivers Abstract
  • Pre-Employment Health Assessment Form including immunization record
