Description:

Summary: The person in this position will work with multidisciplinary project teams providing project and/or task management and technical support primarily for Barr’s mining clients in addition to other clients in markets such as heavy industry and power generation. Responsibilities are expected to include leading technical analyses related to water balance modeling; hydrologic and hydraulic analyses and engineering studies; interacting with, coordinating with, and potentially leading or managing multi-disciplinary project teams; mentoring junior staff through project work; advising clients on mine water management strategies through completion of alternatives analyses; providing environmental consulting services; writing technical reports; and performing business development likely through conference presentations and writing proposals. Work may involve short-term, out-of-town assignments such as site visits.

Minimum Qualifications:
  1. B.Sc. in civil or environmental engineering
  2. 8 or more years of related work experience with a focus on mining and mine water management
  3. P.Eng. registration or eligibility for immediate registration with APEGA
  4. Experience working with hydrologic, hydraulic, and water quality methods, modeling tools, and software such as GoldSim, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, XPSWMM/PCSWMM, HSPF, HydroCAD, MS Excel, or the MIKE Suite of tools
  5. Familiarity with publicly available datasets to support hydrologic analyses such as USGS gage data in the USA, Hydrometric stations in Canada, climate data from NWS, Environment Canada, or other gages
  6. Experience advising clients on mine water management strategies and alternatives analysis
  7. Developed skills in probabilistic analysis or modeling, uncertainty analyses, and/or Monte Carlo analyses to inform and complete risk assessments
  8. Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
  9. Proven task or project management skills including quality management
  10. Willingness to work cooperatively with project team members in a high-energy working environment that encourages self-initiative
  11. Flexible working style as required to meet deadlines and/or client needs
  12. Legal authorization to work in Canada without the need for sponsorship from Barr Engineering and Environmental Science Canada Ltd., now or in the future
  13. Possession of a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record
Preferred Qualifications:
  1. More than 10 years of experience working on projects directly related to job responsibilities described above at a consulting engineering or mining or industrial worksite
  2. M.Sc. or PhD degree(s) in civil or environmental engineering
  3. Strong relationships with clients and the ability to develop or foster ongoing relationships and maintain a high level of client service
  4. Examples of providing water resources engineering to support permitting and compliance
  5. Experience with mine closure and reclamation planning such as assessing alternatives and developing a plan, including community involvement
  6. Expertise with one or more of the following: data analysis, visualization, and presentation; hydraulic structure (outlet works) analysis and design; risk-informed decision making for alternative development and selection; climate change analysis for mine water management decision making; water recovery and re-use; cost-benefit assessments; due diligence services (e.g., review boards) for water management projects

A hybrid work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid work arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office. This position is based out of Barr's Calgary, Alberta, office.

NOTE: Some work locations will feature the rough terrain typical of construction sites or require lifting and moving equipment. Safety and other training will be provided. Drug screening and participating in a random drug screening program will be required to work for some clients. #LI-Hybrid
