Psychologist - Child, Youth & Family Services

Through its core values of Courage, Respect and Excellence , CAMH is implementing its Strategic Plan: Connected CAMH, to transform lives, ignite innovation and discovery, revolutionize education and drive social change. CAMH is more than a hospital, it is a cause. CAMH is on a mission to change the way society thinks about and responds to mental illness. They aim to eliminate prejudice and discrimination and shape a world where mental illness is central to our healthcare system – a world where Mental Health is Health.

CAMH is the largest mental health and addiction teaching hospital in Canada as well as one of the world's leading research centres in its field. Our services are delivered to help transform the lives of people affected by mental illness and addictions. Our goal is to tailor treatment to each individual, providing client-centered, comprehensive, coordinated care. As part of the Child, Youth, and Emerging Adult Program (CYEAP), the Child Youth and Family Services (CYFS) provides care and treatment to children and youth between the ages of 6 and 24.

Position Description
Child, Youth and Family Services has partnered with the Toronto Northwest Justice Centre to provide targeted, multi-sector community supports and programming, which are designed to wrap around youth and break the cycle of offending while addressing the ongoing systemic problem of the overrepresentation of young Black and racialized offenders in the justice system. Justice Centres move justice out of the traditional courtroom and into a community setting by bringing together justice, health, and social services to address the root causes of crime, break the cycle of offending, and improve community safety.

The CYFS is seeking a part-time temporary (12-months) Psychologist, who will work largely with Black and racialized Justice Centre participants, between the ages of 12 and 24 years, and their families, who are accessing services through the Justice Centre and have identified mental health and/or substance use support needs. The incumbent will provide consultation to other professionals working with this population through CYEAP and across CAMH, and work collaboratively with the Substance Abuse Program for African Canadian and Caribbean Youth (SAPACCY), and the Youth Justice Assessment Clinic (YJAC). This position will report to the Senior Manager of Child, Youth and Family Services.

The successful candidate will be responsible for providing both clinical psychological assessment and treatment. Your duties include administering and interpreting psychological and psychoeducational standardized measures, preparing court-ordered psychological assessment reports, as well as providing feedback to staff and to families. The successful candidate will also supervise and provide support to clinical students and staff in the clinical assessment of clients and the preparation of court reports. You will support a healthy workplace that embraces diversity, encourages teamwork and complies with all applicable regulatory and legislative requirements. This position is located at 80 Workman Way.

The successful candidate will possess a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology and be registered in good standing with the College of Psychologists of Ontario to work with youth as both a Clinical and Forensic Psychologist. You will have 3 years clinical experience. Experience working with complex, diverse youth within this age group and their families is required. You will have knowledge of, and clinical experience working with, justice-involved youth, in an integrated clinical/research environment. Demonstrated skills and experience in providing culturally responsive clinical care to African, Caribbean and/or Black and other racialized children and youth working in a multi-system, inter-professional environment is required.

The successful candidate will have a strong theoretical background in developmental psychopathology as well as youth and family clinical interviewing and assessment. Strong knowledge of the Youth Criminal Justice Act (Canada) and associated criminal justice processes is required. Your strengths include an ability to provide focused psychological assessments utilizing standardized assessment measures and you will have a demonstrated ability to administer, score and interpret psychological and psychoeducational tests. Experience using recognized risk assessment tools such as the Youth Level of Service Inventory (YLS), the SAVRY, and the ERASOR is essential, as is experience in efficient preparation and writing of reports for court.

An integrated knowledge of mental health and addictions as well as strong skills in individual and family counseling, assessment, and treatment are essential. Knowledge of community resources in mental health and substance use treatment within the youth sector is an asset. Excellent leadership, organizational, interpersonal, and written communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced clinical environment are also essential. Computer skills, including word processing, electronic communication, and workload measures are essential. Bilingualism (French/English) or proficiency in a second language would be an asset.

All applicants offered and accepting employment must complete a Vulnerable Sector Police Records Check. The offer of employment will be conditional upon receipt of the satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Police Records Check.
