With our collaborative, thoughtful, efficient, and accountable approach, alongside our ESG practices, world‑class team and incredible workplace culture, Hopewell is a true real estate leader.Position SummaryReporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Corporate Controller is a key member of the finance leadership team, responsible for overseeing all accounting operations, financial reporting, internal controls, and compliance activities. This role ensures the integrity and accuracy of financial information while providing strategic insights to support business decision‑making. The Controller will manage the accounting team, implement best practices, and serve as a trusted advisor to senior leadership on accounting matters.Key ResponsibilitiesOwn and manage the month‑end, quarter‑end, hard‑close, and year‑end close processes to ensure timely and accurate completionReview consolidated financial statements in accordance with Canadian accounting standards (ASPE)Coordinate with external accountants and manage all aspects of the annual review processEnsure compliance with all regulatory, statutory, and other reporting requirementsPrepare management reports, variance analyses, and financial presentations for the executive team and the board of directorsMaintain technical accounting documentation and position papers for complex transactionsMonitor changes in accounting standards and assess the impact on the organizationAccounting Operations & SystemsMaintain and continuously improve the chart of accounts structureDevelop, document, and implement accounting policies, procedures, and internal controlsEnsure proper documentation and support for all financial transactionsEvaluate existing accounting systems and recommend improvements to enhance efficiency and accuracyLead implementation of new accounting software or ERP systems as neededOptimize use of technology to automate processes and improve data integrityDesign, implement, and maintain comprehensive internal control frameworksConduct regular assessments of control effectiveness and identify areas of riskDocument key business processes and control matricesInvestigate and resolve accounting discrepanciesSafeguard company assets through proper segregation of duties and authorization protocolsMonitor compliance with corporate policies and proceduresTax Planning & ComplianceOversee preparation and filing of all corporate income tax returns (federal and provincial)Oversee payroll tax compliance and reporting obligationsWork with external tax advisors to optimize corporate tax strategiesMonitor legislative changes affecting corporate taxation in Alberta and CanadaRecruit, hire, and onboard accounting team members, as neededProvide ongoing coaching, mentoring, and professional development opportunitiesConduct performance reviews and establish clear goals and expectationsFoster a culture of continuous improvement, collaboration, and accountabilityDelegate responsibilities effectively while maintaining oversightBuild technical capabilities within the team through training and knowledge sharingManage team capacity and workload during peak periodsCross‑functional PartnershipServe as a business partner to operational leaders across the organizationProvide financial insights and analysis to support strategic decision‑makingCollaborate with treasury on cash management and funding requirementsPartner with FP&A team on planning and analysis initiativesWork with legal department on contracts, entity structures, and compliance mattersCommunicate complex financial information clearly to non‑financial stakeholdersRequired QualificationsCPA designation is requiredBachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related fieldMinimum 7‑10 years of progressive accounting and finance experience, with at least 3‑5 years in a controller or senior accounting management roleStrong technical knowledge of Canadian GAAP (ASPE)Deep understanding of Canadian federal and Alberta tax regulationsProven experience managing full‑cycle accounting operations and financial close processesDemonstrated experience implementing and maintaining internal controlsStrong leadership and team management capabilitiesAdvanced proficiency in accounting software and ERP systemsPreferred QualificationsExperience in real estate, construction, or development industriesExposure to complex corporate structures, including multiple legal entities and partnershipsExperience with business combinations, acquisitions, or significant growth scenariosExperience implementing new accounting systems or leading digital transformation initiativesThe ideal candidate demonstrates exceptional attention to detail with strong analytical and problem‑solving skills. They possess excellent communication abilities, capable of translating complex financial information for non‑financial stakeholders. Strategic thinking combined with hands‑on operational excellence is essential. The Corporate Controller must exhibit high integrity, sound judgment, and the ability to work effectively under pressure while meeting tight deadlines.
