DESCRIPTION:
Under the general direction of the Supervisor Capital Accounting, the Financial Accountant - Capital is accountable for the preparation and analysis of financial information related to FortisAlberta’s capital assets. This position will contribute to property and capital accounting and associated reporting activities to support rapid and accurate period-end close (monthly, quarterly, annual). The Financial Accountant - Capital will also be responsible for supporting business operations as it relates to capital, involving the provision of accurate and timely information to internal stakeholders, which includes budgets, actuals, analysis, and forecasts.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE (but not limited to):
• Prepare monthly reporting and analysis for capital expenditures, fixed asset transactions and inventory to meet management, regulatory and audit requirements.
• Responsible for timely and accurate set-up and maintenance of capital projects and fixed asset records. 
• Provide capital project reporting, project set-up and completion services to business operations.
• Prepare and review journal entries, account reconciliations and related analysis.
• Ensure the accuracy and completeness of capital expenditure, fixed asset and inventory reporting, as well as advising the manager of any issues identified.
• Partner with the business to identify risks and opportunities related to capital management and cost control as well as design and implement strategies to close discovered gaps
• Support the eventual upgrade of fixed asset accounting and capital project reporting systems (SAP ECC to S4/Hana)
• Maintain effective relationships with multiple internal stakeholders to support the accounting and reporting process, as well as provide financial guidance.
• Assist external and internal auditors in performing quarterly reviews and year-end audits of financial statements, including preparation of working papers and all other related documentation and deliverables relating to capital assets. 
• Analyze overhead loadings to forecast allocation percentages associated with capital expenditures and recommend loading rate changes.
• Participate in identifying opportunities to streamline or automate processes to continuously improve service delivery while maintaining controls and provide support in the implementation of enhanced tools for efficiencies. 
• Maintain and improve documentation of processes for capital accounting deliverables and accountabilities, including, but not limited to, the evaluation of internal controls.
• Assist with the implementation of new accounting standards, along with other disclosure or governance requirements as they relate to areas of responsibility. 
• Provide accounting support and recommendations for significant capital transactions. 
• Attend select inventory counts to conduct internal review and ensure proper procedures are followed and an accurate count is conducted, as well as identifying issues and providing recommendations for resolution.
• Special projects and other duties as assigned.

• Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to clearly convey information to various audiences in both formal and informal settings.
• Thorough analytical and critical thinking skills to perform independent analysis with attention to detail.
• Ability to apply sound professional judgment in determining the appropriate accounting or reporting methods in various situations, evaluating possible solutions and providing recommendations.
• Excellent organizational and time management skills, and ability to work independently, to manage multiple priorities and competing demands with tight timelines.
• Demonstrated initiative in recognizing opportunities for improvement and efficiency, with a willingness to challenge status quo.
• Demonstrated ability to build strong partnerships with all levels of employees through intuitive business insight and personal credibility.
• Proven ability to engage continuous improvement efforts to be as efficient as possible, enabling value-add analysis while maintaining workload.
• Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); specifically utilizing Excel for data analysis and modeling.
• SAP experience in Asset Accounting (FI-AA) and FI/CO modules would be considered an asset.
• Technical proficiencies in applying generally accepted accounting principles; U.S. GAAP knowledge would be an asset.
• Experience working in a regulated environment, preferably within the electrical/energy industry, would be an asset.
• Exposure to group depreciation accounting is also considered an asset. 


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Bachelor’s degree in finance, Commerce, or Business Administration plus a minimum of 5 years of capital accounting experience is required. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
• A Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation is required.
