Our team is a group of creative professionals from all walks of life, and we want to hear from you

The position:

We are actively seeking a senior fire protection engineer at our Edmonton location.

What will you be doing?

  • Contribute to all project phases, ensuring compliance with applicable fire safety codes and standards while adhering to defined scope, timelines, and budget.
  • Design and specification of Fire Protection Systems, including but not limited to fire suppression systems, fire alarm systems, smoke management systems, and emergency lighting systems.
  • Prepare engineering drawings and specifications for fire protection systems to ensure detailed and accurate representation of the designed systems.
  • Review Client Specifications to ensure that all fire protection requirements are understood and incorporated into the design.
  • Write technical reports and analyses to support design submissions, demonstrating the effectiveness and compliance of fire protection systems.
  • Review shop drawings for compliance with the design and participate in the development of fire protection engineering standards to ensure consistency and high quality in all projects.
  • Obtain proposals from and follow up with suppliers and contractors to ensure that the materials and workmanship meet the project’s fire protection requirements.
  • Partner with cross-functional project team members to integrate fire protection systems with other building systems for a cohesive and efficient design.
  • Visit project sites for project-related activities, including inspections and audits of existing fire protection systems and to ensure compliance with the fire safety design during construction.
  • Perform fire risk assessments and modelling, including egress modelling and fire dynamics simulations, to ensure the safety and efficiency of fire protection strategies.

What you bring?

  • A Degree in Fire Protection Engineering or Mechanical Engineering with a specialization in Fire Protection, accompanied by a minimum of 10 years' experience in designing fire protection systems for commercial buildings, low/high-rise buildings, and multi-family residential buildings.
  • P.Eng. Designation with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) in good standing (required), with a focus on Fire Protection Engineering.
  • Strong communication skills are essential to effectively coordinate with inter-discipline teams, clients, vendors, and subcontractors, ensuring high-value engineering outcomes across projects.
  • In-depth knowledge and familiarity with fire protection industry codes and standards, including NFPA codes, and the ability to apply these in conjunction with client specifications for detailed fire protection system design.
  • Demonstrated leadership and business development skills to guide project teams and contribute to the growth of the fire protection engineering services.
  • Proficiency in software tools relevant to fire protection engineering, including but not limited to Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, Revit, and HydraCAD
  • Fluency in English is required for clear and effective communication across all levels of project involvement.

Who you are:

  • A proactive problem-solver: You're a natural self-starter with an innate ability to identify priorities, manage your schedule effectively, and meet tight deadlines. Your proactive approach ensures you are always ahead of the curve, ready to address challenges head-on.
  • An adept multitasker: Comfortable juggling multiple projects simultaneously, you excel at organizing and prioritizing tasks independently. Your ability to navigate complex projects without guidance makes you a valuable asset to any team.
  • A team player with open communication: Hardworking and reliable, you are committed to maintaining transparent and open communication with your team. Your dependability fosters trust and confidence among your colleagues, contributing to a cohesive team dynamic.
  • Resilient and adaptable: You thrive in fast-paced environments and embrace challenges with enthusiasm rather than avoidance. Your resilience enables you to adapt to changing circumstances and emerging issues in fire protection engineering, ensuring project success and innovation.

At Design Works Engineering, we offer a career rather than a job. Supporting our team members to reach their full potential is at the heart of our business, and it is how we deliver superior value to our clients on each of our building projects.

Design Works Engineering is an equal opportunity employer. If you feel you are the right fit for this position, please apply confidently. Please let us know if you require any accommodation in the recruitment process.
