Position: Hematologist joint community/faculty position – Benign Hematology
Description
The Division of Hematology (Ottawa Blood Disease Centre) Department of Medicine of The Ottawa Hospital/University of Ottawa is experiencing significant clinical and academic growth. We are seeking a part-time academic hematologist specializing in Benign Hematology to help us lead in clinical care, education, and research by joining a community-based clinical practice with a part-time academic role.
The Ottawa Blood Disease Centre is a large group of 41 faculty members, 11 specializing in benign hematology, and 3 working in joint community-faculty positions. The Division has three well-defined and successful clinical and research programs: Malignant Hematology, Thrombosis, and Benign Hematology. The benign hematology group includes dedicated programs in Apheresis, Hemostasis, Hemoglobinopathy, Transfusion Medicine, and General Hematology.
The Ottawa Hospital is a 1150 bed tertiary-care hospital serving Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec at four inpatient sites (Civic, General, Heart Institute, and the Rehabilitation Centre) and one ambulatory centre (Riverside). There are approximately 50,000 inpatient admissions, 160,000 emergency visits, and over one million outpatient visits annually.
The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI) is TOH’s research arm. It ranks fourth out of more than 600 Canadian hospitals for competitive, peer-reviewed grants from the prestigious Canadian Institutes of Health Research. OHRI houses over 2,200 researchers, publishing more than 2,000 studies yearly, with hundreds being high-impact publications (top 10% of citations) and places 5th overall in Canada for research funding.
The Department of Medicine is a research-intensive Department. Members currently hold 28 University Research Chairs. The Department receives approximately $60 million per year in external research funding and members publish approximately 1200 peer-reviewed publications annually.
The Faculty of Medicine is a nationally recognized leader, ranked among Canada’s top-tier medical faculties. The Faculty ranks 3rd in Canada for research intensity in Medicine/Science (Maclean’s) and 4th in Canada for citations (2022 THE rankings). The University of Ottawa is the largest bilingual (English-French) university in the world and the first and largest bilingual medical school in Canada. The Faculty of Medicine has a long history of conducting the highest quality basic and clinical research, in close partnership with affiliated hospitals and research institutes. The Web of Science recently published a list of the most highly cited researchers in the world, where seven out of eight researchers identified from uOttawa are from the Faculty of Medicine. Together, these remarkable achievements are a strong testament to the competitiveness and excellence of our Faculty.
Responsibilities
The role of a joint community-faculty hematologist includes participation in hematology inpatient services, availability and supervision of hospital-based treatments and procedures through the three Ottawa Hospital Medical Daycare Units, plus shared central intake for benign hematology referrals. Joint community-faculty hematologists participate in medical education teaching, academic rounds, and committee work of their interest. The successful applicant will also work in a community-based clinical hematology practice.
Academically, the division of hematology supports undergraduate and postgraduate training, including subspecialty fellowship trainees in all three of our programs. The Division of Hematology and the University of Ottawa Department of Medicine support research, education, and academic roles. The successful candidate would participate in part-time associate benefits through the competitive Department of Medicine Academic Incentive Program.
Qualifications
The successful candidate must hold an MD degree; have, or be eligible for certification in Hematology by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada with expertise in lymphoproliferative diseases; be a member of, or be eligible to be a member of, the Canadian Medical Protective Association; have, or be eligible for, licensure in Ontario; and be eligible for a University of Ottawa academic appointment. The successful candidate will have training in keeping with an academic position that includes enhanced protected time for research or quality improvement.
The University of Ottawa and The Ottawa Hospital are bilingual institutions and therefore in the case of potentially successful candidates of equal ability, a bilingual (French/English) candidate would be preferred.
The income for this position is derived from a variety of sources including but not limited to clinical billings (fee-for-service), salary support (AFP/APP) as well as honorariums/stipends.

We strongly encourage applications from Indigenous persons, visible minorities members (racialized persons), persons with disabilities, women, as well as from all qualified candidates with the skills and knowledge to productively engage with equitable, diverse and inclusive communities. We encourage qualified applicants from all groups with historical and/or current barriers to equity to apply. Upon request, accommodations due to a disability are available throughout the recruitment process.
Please note Canadian citizens and permanent residents will be given priority. We sincerely thank all applicants for their interest; however, only those selected for an interview will be contacted.
