Introduction

We are looking for energetic and motivated individuals to spend their summer working with engineering and operations for Manitoba Infrastructure. We offer a positive team environment and extensive on-the-job training, with several opportunities available. Positions are temporary with incumbents working until the end of the construction season. Conditions of Employment:
  1. Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
  2. Must possess and maintain a valid Manitoba Class 5 driver's licence.
  3. Must be able to wear basic Personal Protective Equipment (minimum hard hat, safety vest, steel toed shoes).
  4. Must have the ability to travel to worksites (in both day and night conditions) within the province by ground or air transportation with possible overnight accommodations in hotels/motels.
  5. Must be able to work extended hours (evenings), weekends, and statutory holidays, subject to call outs and working under adverse weather conditions.
  6. Must be physically capable of performing all of the required job duties such as working in an outdoor rough terrain environment and can be exposed to the following notable hazards as described in the OSHRM Safe Work Practices:
  • Road construction equipment
  • Roadway traffic
  • Asphalt plant area
  • Noise, dust
  • Hand/power tools
  • Moving equipment
  • Slip-trip-fall
  • Bending/lifting, carrying/twisting
  • Insects, vegetation & sharp objects
Qualifications:

Essential:

  1. Ability to perform basic mathematical computations.
  2. Knowledge of Occupational Safety, Health and Risk Management.
  3. Interpersonal skills to verbally communicate effectively and courteously.
  4. Clear and concise written communication skills.
  5. Ability to work cooperatively with a team.
  6. Ability to work independently.
  7. Previous work experience working outdoors and performing manual labour.

Desired:

  1. Experience with Microsoft Office software package.
  2. Knowledge of department construction, procedures, and guidelines as it relates to this position (surveying, material testing, checking, scaling).
Duties:

The Highway Engineering Assistant (HEA) reports to the Highway Project Technologist and receives Lead Hand direction from the Highway Construction Technician (HCT). The HEA will perform elementary technical work while adhering to Department standards, specifications, policies, and procedures. Typical functions at the HEA level can include: Survey Assistant, Checker, Scale Person, Flagperson, and Project Assistant.
