What to expect in this role:

The Workplace Environment Specialist supports the organization by ensuring that our clients and staff have safe, secure, and functional spaces to live and work. This role provides leadership and direction to the facilities team to ensure NAS property and locations are maintained and updated in compliance with OHSE, legislative, and licensing requirements. This role also plays a crucial role in managing, maintaining, and administering the Health and Safety program of the agency with the objection of minimizing accidents, injuries, and environmental damage. This role promotes safety attitudes, safe work practices and environments, and is responsible for educating the organization on Health and Safety best practices through training, orientations, and newsletter articles or memos. This position acts as the agency’s safety expert, and ensures that best practices are followed, this will include facilities best practices in preventative and ongoing site maintenance as well as implementing improvements where applicable.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Provide direction in all matters relating to facility maintenance to support current and future organizational needs
  • Oversee the completion of work orders, maintaining good working relationships between NAS, contractors, and landlords
  • Ensure staff are trained on best practices for day-to-day routine maintenance, general upkeep and site upkeep for all group homes, buildings, and main office
  • Ensure documentation of department funds, equipment, and processes is completed accurately and kept up to date
  • Educate staff on health and safety best practices and ensure NAS policies and procedures are being followed and updated as needed
  • Assist in maintaining the business continuity plans/emergency preparedness plans, hazard assessment, and health and safety related policy and procedures
  • Conduct regular internal safety audits or work sites in sections and provide reports and recommendations to Health and Safety committee
  • Ensure compliance with legislation including Building Safety Code and Standards, Fire Code, and Occupational Health and Safety and provide updates on legislative changes to the Executive team
  • Supervise the facilities team to ensure they are equipped to be successful in their roles
  • Other duties as assigned

Schedule and Pay:

This position is 40 hrs/week, this is an onsite position with primary schedule of Monday-Friday 7:00 – 3:00pm or 8:00am – 4:00pm. Some flexibility in work hours, and evening or weekend work may be required. The rate of pay for this position will be flexible based on relevant qualifications and experience. This position includes cost-shared benefits beginning after 3-months, 5 annual flex days, 6% vacation pay, and mileage pay at $0.50/km.

You are passionate about Health and Safety and ensuring that procedures are followed and have a mindset of continuous improvement. You have strong project management skills, ask questions when you need clarity, and utilizes multiple resources or methods to find the best possible solutions.

Qualifications:

  • 4 – 6 years of experience in a relevant field, with at least 2 – 3 years of supervisory experience
  • A completed Canadian Degree, Diploma, or Certificate in a related field (international equivalencies will be considered)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (including Word, Excel, and Outlook)
  • Knowledgeable of building code, fire code, and safety code requirements
  • Strong mechanical aptitude
  • Ability to perform some hands-on maintenance and repair for group homes and main facility spaces (ie. Minor plumbing, electrical, construction jobs etc.)
  • Experience in developing emergency plans and policies
  • Ability to lift to 50lbs
  • Minimum of Class 5 driver’s license and reliable vehicle to be used for regular local travel to work sites
  • Minimum of $2,000,000 third party liability vehicle insurance by time of hire
