Main Purpose and Function
The Planning Assistant III works in the Special Projects Office (SPO) in the Planning, Urban Design and Sustainability (PDS) Department. This position provides technical and engagement support for the planning, design and implementation of the SPO’s various area plans, major projects, and large and unique sites. This currently includes providing technical and engagement assistance for Broadway Plan, Northeast False Creek Plan, East Fraser Lands, the Jericho Lands, Heather Lands and Central Waterfront projects.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities
The Planning Assistant is responsible for performing technical and engagement work associated with the various SPO work programs, including:
  • Researches, collects data and prepares analysis which forms the basis for decisions and recommendations.
  • Conducts and compiles policy research to support the planning process.
  • Responds to public enquiries and tracking correspondence.
  • Develops presentations and feedback material for a variety of engagement events, and creates and oversees distribution of support materials.
  • Coordinates and moderates online content and tools such as forums, surveys, and podcasts.
  • Organizes public and supporting consultation processes (booking venues, speakers, catering, and supplies; oversees graphic designs, material distribution to public, photography, and takes notes).
  • Leads report back of event outcomes, including timely input analysis, graphics and web presence.
  • Assists with Council reports, presentation boards and materials.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualification Requirements
Education and Experience:
  • Completion of grade 12 supplemented by courses in urban planning, graphics, and/or related courses.
  • Experience in planning, community engagement, graphics, and/or urban design is preferred, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Sound knowledge of civic sustainability, urban design and community development issues.
  • Sound knowledge of drafting, layout work, report design and reproduction and of graphical presentation of statistical data and planning projects.
  • Sound knowledge of the techniques and practices used in performing survey and statistical analyses work.
  • Sound knowledge of and a strong cultural awareness of Indigenous and diverse cultural communities.
  • Sound knowledge of executing comprehensive public and stakeholder engagement processes.
  • Strong verbal, written, graphical and visual presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated reporting, analytical, evaluation skills.
  • Ability to use social media and innovative, online engagement tools.
  • Strong computer and graphics knowledge with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop), web page editing, or equivalent computer applications.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of inter-disciplinary work teams, to multi-task, and to work within defined timelines is essential as are initiative and enthusiasm for public engagement.
  • Ability to build strong relationships with the local residents and business.
  • Ability to meet transportation requirements.
