Detailed Overview

Reporting to the Manager, Clinical Operations, and in accordance with Fraser Health's Vision, Mission and Values, this position oversees the day-to-day activities of the Early Psychosis Intervention (EPI) Program in conjunction with the Manager. Provides clinical leadership to the multidisciplinary team for the development, delivery and evaluation of services, outcomes, and care planning for the effective utilization of client's resources. Provides direct care services through the provision of group intervention and functions as a senior clinician in the provision of case consultation and clinical review to staff and the community. Initiates and carries out research activities, develops and implements quality improvement and risk management processes and participates as a member of local committees and planning bodies.
Responsibilities

  1. Coordinates day-to-day activities of the team to ensure optimal use of resources and efficient use of clinical staff time. Establishes clinical priorities, assigns and adjusts work assignments, ensures that necessary resources are available, promotes a positive team environment, and ensures that staff have access to critical incident defusing and debriefing.
  2. Supervises designated clinical staff by methods such as participating in performance evaluation, assisting in planning staff training, development and orientation requirements, and developing, organizing and implementing in-services and education programs for staff in collaboration with the Manager. Participates in the recruitment of new clinical staff. Provides clinical supervision and conducts clinical file reviews by reviewing quarterly and annual reviews ensuring that they are completed and clinically sound.
  3. Provides leadership and clinical expertise, in conjunction with the Manager and the team, in setting the clinical direction for the program by methods such as determining short and long term goals and objectives for the program and defining target population, and maintaining an effective multidisciplinary team capable of providing services to youth, young adults and their families.
  4. Assists staff and therapistsin resolving complex clinical issues by providing clinical supervision and consultation, role modeling, instruction, support, and coaching with problem solving. Trains new staff.
  5. Provides direct care through the provision of group intervention to clients and/or families in the program.
  6. Provides consultation and liaison with other EPI Programs, Fraser Health Mental Health Teams, MCFD Child and Youth Mental Health teams, and other professionals and agencies such as family physicians and school districts. Collaborates with other community groups (professionals, consumers, and families) to plan and coordinate the development of resources and service programs in the community to ensure a full spectrum of Mental Health services to meet the identified needs of the target population.
  7. Provides education to clients, families, and healthcare professionals on identified learning needs on issues related to high risk factors, recovery and current evidence based practice relevant to early psychosis intervention. Promotes public awareness of early psychosis and the EPI Program.
  8. Maintains client records by methods such as documenting client assessments, charting client information, preparing progress notes and reports in accordance with established standards, policies and procedures to meet regulatory requirements and documenting for future reference.
  9. Maintains a variety of program records such as program activities, workload statistics, and monthly reports by methods such as recording information into approved formats, collating data, analyzing trends, accounting for variances, preparing reports as required, and making recommendations to the Manager.
  10. Initiates, develops, and carries out research activities and program planning and development relevant to the needs of the client, families, community and facilities in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team. Follows through with research methodology. Disseminates research findings and ensures clinical practices and protocols are consistent with research and evidence-based practice in the field of Mental Health.
  11. Provides input to the Manager with regard to the optimal use of budgetary resources by making recommendations as requested. Provides input to the Manager in the creation of service contracts; acts as a resource to funding agencies and performs regular contract evaluations.
  12. Develops and implements quality improvement processes by methods such as engaging in programs/practice evaluation, identifying opportunities for change, assessing available resources, initiating solutions, analyzing outcomes and identifying areas for improved efficiency and effectiveness in service delivery to enhance clients care services and reduce gaps in the community. Participates in quality assurance audits, facility reviews and facility or staff investigations as required. Develops a complaint management process. Assists in resolving client and family complaints by discussing issues with those involved for the purpose of determining an appropriate resolution.
  13. Participates in risk management for the clinical area by methods such as conducting safety audits, investigating and reviewing related reports and taking corrective action. Reviews Serious Incident Reports, files and advises Manager of any that should be brought to his/her attention. Recommends changes to selected policies, procedures and protocols and provides feedback to the Manager.
  14. Participates as a member of local committees and planning bodies by methods such as attending meetings, providing input, facilitating resolution of issues, and advocating the goals and objectives of the program, as delegated by the Manager.
  15. Maintains broad development in mental health and addictions by methods such as reviewing literature in the assigned clinical specialty area, consulting with clinical and community experts within the field, evaluating clinical practice and participating in professional development activities in order to improve care through new evidence based practices.
  16. Facilitates student placements through affiliated Colleges/Universities.
  17. Performs other related duties.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

Master's Degree in Social Work, Clinical Counselling, or other relevant health related discipline. Five (5) years' recent related experience, including two (2) years of staff supervisory experience and one (1) year of early psychosis intervention, as well as clinical experience in individual, family and group modalities of practice in mental health/psychiatry in community and/or hospital settings, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Eligible for registration with relevant professional association. Valid B.C. Driver's license.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of adolescent and adult psychiatry.
  • Demonstrated thorough knowledge of normal and abnormal youth and family development, risk and protective factors for health development, promotion, prevention and early intervention approaches.
  • Demonstrated therapeutic skill in the area of case management, individual, group, and family therapy for youth and adults with early psychosis.
  • Demonstrated ability and knowledge of supervisory and consultative processes and of clinical supervision models.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide effective clinical supervision and leadership to staff within a multidisciplinary team setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing in English.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, organize and prioritize work in continuously changing and complex environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach and facilitate learning of staff, clients and families, and the community.
  • Demonstrated ability to design, implement, revise and participate in the evaluation of programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively with team members, family and the public.
  • Working knowledge of contract management.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively deal with conflict situations.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of principles, practices and theories of social work, clinical counselling or other relevant health related discipline.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of policy and procedures of the Health Authority including confidentiality and FOI principles.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of care delivery systems, treatment methodologies and an ability to apply this knowledge to practice.
  • Working knowledge of psychopharmacology, community resources, crisis theory and de-escalation techniques and knowledge of psychosocial rehabilitation principles.
  • Working knowledge of DSM IV Multiaxial Diagnosis or International Classification of Diseases 10.
  • Problem solving and decision making skills and ability to exercise sound judgement.
  • Demonstrated ability to operated related equipment.
  • Physical ability to perform duties of the job.
