ANIMAL PROTECTION OFFICER (CONTRACT) - WESTERN MB

This interesting and challenging position is responsible for the following:

  • Responding to Animal Welfare concerns and determining appropriate course of action under the Animal Care Act of Manitoba.
  • Conducting inspections to determine compliance under the Animal Care Act of Manitoba.
  • Enforcing compliance to ensure adequate animal care and husbandry, taking action to relieve animal of distress.
  • Transporting animals to veterinary facilities and shelters in order to receive appropriate care.
  • Issuing recommendations and corrective measures including monetary penalties to correct non-compliance as required under the Act.
  • Collecting evidence and samples.
  • Liaising with partner agencies such as Public Health, Police, Office of the Fire Commissioner and Child & Family Services as required to ensure the safety of animals as well as the general public.
  • Please be advised this is a contract position. You will be required to travel within your general area.

REQUIRED/ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • At least 18 years of age.
  • Education: High School diploma or GED.
  • Experience working with animals e.g., Registered Veterinary Technicians (RVTs), animal boarding facilities staff, livestock farm staff, By-Law officer, Conservation officers, Government regulatory staff, etc.
  • Strong animal handling skills & experience.
  • Knowledge of animal husbandry.
  • Strong written & verbal communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Must be reliable and flexible with availability.
  • Ability to work with diverse groups of people.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and consult supervisors as required.
  • Strong time management skills.
  • Ability to de-escalate seemingly contentious conditions.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver's License (Full).
  • Ability to provide a clean criminal background & vulnerable sector check.
  • Effective problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Basic computer & typing skills.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Post Secondary Education.
  • One or more completed years in Veterinary Technology, Animal Health Technology, Police Foundations or equivalent.
  • Experience with various animal species.
  • Knowledge of a second language or culture.
