Hecla owns the majority of the historic high-grade Keno Hill Silver District located in Canada’s Yukon Territory. We’re developing two underground deposits, the Bermingham mine and the Flame & Moth mine. This is a great opportunity to be part of the team that is operating one of the highest-grade silver operations in the world.

We are looking for an individual to join our growing team. The Mine Geologist will report to the Chief Mine Geologist or designate (your “Supervisor”). The successful candidate will collect and interpret geological data and provide pertinent technical support for mine development and ore grade control.

This is a 14 day on / 14 day off rotation at our Keno Hill Mine in Elsa, YT. All air and ground travel arrangements from Point of Hire (POH) to site and return are included for this position.

RESPONSIBILITES

  • Adhere to and promote Hecla’s health and safety regulations and policies.
  • Map and sample ore and waste underground excavations in accordance with established procedures.
  • Provide technical support to mining crews to optimize ore extraction and deliver on mine plan.
  • Digitize and input geological mapping data into applicable software (Leapfrog, Deswik, GeoSpark)
  • Track samples and review assay results applying established QA/QC protocols.
  • Apply grade control procedures to monitor and track ore and waste haulage.
  • Develop geological level plans and cross-sections, integrating lithological and structural data, current and historic mapping, and drill hole data.
  • Analyze, validate, and interpret collected and historic data to aid in the construct of geological models.
  • Support the planning and execution of diamond drill programs and data management.
  • Collaborate with technical and mining personnel regarding Mine plan and ore grade control.
  • Build and maintain strong working knowledge of relevant software packages including: Deswik, Deswik GeoTools and Leapfrog.
  • Other accountabilities as assigned to support mine geology objectives.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Geology or closely related field with 2 – 5 years’ working experience in an underground mine. Underground mine experience is preferred but not required.
  • Experience in the geology and underground mining of narrow vein precious metals is considered an asset.
  • Be proactive about work safety and ensure compliance with all applicable regulations and procedures.
  • Be a collaborative team player that works well in multidisciplinary teams comprised of geologists, engineers, mill, and mine operation personnel.
  • Registered as, or eligible for registration as a Geologist In Training or Geologist.
  • Good communication (oral and written) and analytical skills.
  • Proficiency in the use of Deswik, leapfrog and GeoSpark is considered an asset.
  • Identify, analyze, and recommend opportunities for safety, production, and cost improvements.
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license
