Description Position at Dumas Manager - Health, Safety and Environment

Dumas is a leading full-service underground mining contractor providing services to clients throughout the Americas. We specialize in mine construction, mine development, production mining, mine services and engineering. Dumas is the contractor of choice for the most technically challenging underground projects, including mine construction, full-scale mine development, production mining, mine services and engineering. The Manager Health & Safety is responsible for leading the Safety / Training Department in providing the appropriate training and safety guidance to all employees in all departments. To promote, coordinate and implement activities to improve and maintain high levels of safety performance. To act as a resource for all of the workplace parties and an advocate of the advancement of safety performance. This position is an active member of the Senior Operating Team for Canada.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Knowledgeable of Health and Safety reporting systems and audit regularly for accuracy of information and that the system is functioning properly
  2. Ensure up to date documentation including but not limited to; Standard Operating Procedures, investigations, policies etc
  3. Directly supervise the Health and Safety team as well as safety & Training personnel at the projects/sites
  4. Work within the operations group and all levels of supervision to develop and maintain a strong safety culture
  5. Build relationships with Government and Nongovernment agencies to promote Dumas Safety
  6. Oversee the Modular Training Programs to keep all training current
  7. Liaise with the client’s Safety & Management team and visit the sites regularly
  8. Develop and establish job procedures in conjunction with operational departmental personnel
  9. Develop Emergency Response plans at active project sites
  10. Oversee the Dumas Contracting Safety & Training programs for the Canadian Operational Sites
  11. Provide support and guidance to the various Joint Health and Safety Committees (JH&SCs) within the Dumas group
  12. Supply support and collaborate with International Projects & Senior Management Team
  13. Conduct workplace inspections / audits
  14. Attend client group Safety Meetings at the sites
  15. Assist operational leadership with investigations
  16. Facilitate and coordinate Train-the-Trainer and Supervisory courses
  17. Liaise with various Safety Associations . OMCSA, WSN, OMA, MTCU, MAMI, AMQ, etc
  18. Support mine rescue program and training
  19. Facilitate safety awards when appropriate milestones are met
  20. Arrange for Advanced First Aid and Standard First Aid Training
  21. Liaise with vendors and suppliers, Ministry of Labour, Ontario Mine Rescue, WSIB and Municipal Fire Departments
  22. Establish a working relationship with client and other mines with respect to safety, training and emergency response
  23. Conduct information sessions (safety talks, staff meetings, Arrange for employee training
  24. Comply with and promote Dumas Safety Programs, procedures, and policies
  25. Stop & correct substandard acts or conditions
  26. Commending employee health & safety performance
  27. Advise workers of the existence of any potential or actual danger to health, safety, and the environment
  28. Take every precaution reasonable in the circumstances for the protection of a worker
  29. Work with new health and safety management software to ensure Supervisors and projects have the tools and resources necessary to work safely and effectively
  30. Facilitate annual safety summits with the safety team to evaluate performance, and plan to address current and future gaps
  31. Promote the IRS ensuring all workers are aware of their personal accountability to safety
  32. Assist in new project proposals, bids, or safety management documentation requirements
  33. Communicate HSE semi-monthly and monthly performance report

Competencies, Skills & Knowledge:

  1. Post Secondary School Degree/Diploma in associated field or equivalent experience with a Minimum Grade 12
  2. Good understanding & working knowledge of the OH&SA and Regulations for Mines & Mining Plants, WHMIS & Loss Control Techniques
  3. Accreditation in the U/G Common Core, various mining specialties and the U/G Supervisory Common Core
  4. Accredited Safety Auditor (preferred)
  5. Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation preferred
  6. Minimum 10 years experience in U/G mining
  7. Minimum 10 years experience in a leadership role
  8. Minimum 10 years in Occupational Health & Safety Systems Management
  9. Familiarity with the various Common Core programs that are administered through the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities
