Position Summary
This position is based out of the Acheson facility with requirements to travel to various McAsphalt facilities within Western Canada on a limited basis. The Health & Safety Assistant will be a member of the McAsphalt HSE&Q Team responsible for building a culture of excellence and awareness in this area and collaborating in the achievement of team goals. Responsibilities will include assisting with the development and execution of work procedures and making health, safety and environmental (HSE&Q) recommendations accordingly. The role will also assist the Regional Specialist and Facility Managers with preparing, maintaining, and updating plant specific HSE&Q policies and manuals, developing methods to drive continuous improvement of HSE&Q practices, ensuring compliance with all HSE&Q regulations, and changes to laws and regulations that impact the organization. The role will support by providing work direction and training to management and plant-level employees with technical support for environmental and safety-related controls during projects and maintenance activities.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Assist with special projects including but not limited to Risk Control Projects (RCP).
  2. Provide support with environmental engineering initiatives.
  3. Prepare, develop, and implement site compliance audits working with the corporate HSE Manager.
  4. Develop and deliver site-specific Health, Safety and Environmental related training.
  5. Assist with accident/incident investigations and the development/implementation of effective corrective actions.
  6. Provide support as it relates to the continual improvement of the facility Integrated Management System (IMS) as it relates to HSE.
  7. Assist HSE Specialist and Facility Management with compliance monitoring.
  8. Monitor, and analyze applicable regulations and communicate information on changes in the regulatory environments and delegate responsibility for further analysis and implementation.
  9. Lead, coordinate, or participate on multidisciplinary project teams.
  10. Conduct and assist with the development of job hazard analysis and direct the completion of corrective actions.
  11. Provide input into specific work instructions for day-to-day tasks.
  12. Conduct workplace safety inspections and safety talks.
  13. Act as site HS committee member.
  14. Inspection and maintenance of emergency equipment.
  15. Other duties as required.

Required Qualifications

  1. Completion or working towards a designation (CRSP, NCSO) or bachelor’s degree in health, safety, or environmental field or equivalent experience required.
  2. Demonstrated HSE work experience.
  3. Thorough working understanding of Provincial and Canadian Occupational Health and Safety laws and regulations is essential.
  4. Excellent verbal, written, and presentation communications skills.
  5. Proficient in the use of Microsoft Word and Excel at the intermediate level.
  6. Proficient in English.
  7. Good interpersonal/coaching and strong organizational skills.
  8. Knowledgeable in the areas which involve government regulations and worker's compensation rules and regulations.
  9. Valid driver’s license. Clean Drivers Abstract. Ability to travel to various facilities in western Canada.
