General Responsibilities

All Roles

  • Attend staff meetings, planning committees, and collaborate with the college, as required.
  • Create monthly reports and recaps of projects and initiatives to be presented to the SSU Board of Directors.
  • Create initiatives to support the SSU organizational goals and priorities, while raising awareness and providing support for services and issues that students encounter.
  • Assist other Vice-Presidents with their initiatives and projects to ensure all campuses are being considered and represented equitably.
  • Represent your respective campus, as needed, while recognizing the President as the primary spokesperson of Sheridan Student Union Inc.
  • Collect feedback and analyze student trends to provide guidance for the organization’s goals and priorities.
  • Hold the responsibility of being a signing officer for the corporation, as needed.
  • Help develop, review, and maintain a yearly budget for the Executive Team.
  • Attend retreats, events, and conferences as authorized by the President.
  • Other duties as assigned by the President or Executive Coordinator

The VP of EDI stands up for marginalized students. They spearhead initiatives to incorporate the values of inclusion, diversity, equity, and belonging on Sheridan Campuses. They fight against discrimination at Sheridan College by running campaigns and engaging in lobbying, adding another voice to the conversation for populations who demand fairness. The VP of Equity pledges to respect the ideals and concepts of inclusion, diversity, equality, and belonging. In particular, the Vice President of Equity considers concerns of access, gender justice, Indigenous reconciliation and acknowledgment, anti-racism and anti-oppression, and other issues of injustice as they pertain to student leadership.

Specific Duties:

  • Identify and develop strategies for removing barriers to ensure all students can participate in the SSU programs, activities, and initiatives
  • Ensure inclusive and non-discriminatory working environment within SSU. Work with the Executive Team to develop inclusive practices, resources, policies, and tools to support equitable implementation of day-to-day activities
  • Ensure compliance with equity mandate and relevant policies in Sheridan College.
  • Lead EDI Campaigns, partnerships, representations and relations within Sheridan’s related internal departments and outside organizations.
  • Work with the college in supporting survivors of Gender-Based and Sexual Violence.
  • Relations with student equity-focused groups from a marginalized and equity-seeking community.
  • Identify opportunities to disseminate information and resources regarding equity and inclusion to the campus community
  • Develop partnerships with community groups and agencies to support equity and capacity-building work across campus

The VP of Advocacy and Community Development is your advocate to people in power. They raise issues faced by students to municipal, provincial, and federal levels of government, through campaigns, lobbying, and more. They also assist the President in engaging directly with the Sheridan College’s administration. This role will focus not only on the development of Sheridan community, but the surrounding community as well. Bringing in external partners to offers perks, opportunities, and services to students, and facilitating opportunities for Sheridan to engage with the local community in a variety of ways. They will also be working towards building a positive campus community and enhancing the identity of individual campuses.

Specific Duties:

  • Advocate for the fair treatment of all Sheridan students academically, personally, and professionally.
  • Coordinate student outreach to support students and guide them to the most appropriate service for the issues they may be facing.
  • Determine gaps in support and resources for students from all communities from an SSU and college perspective.
  • Create community-building initiatives to connect those seeking others within a particular community.
  • Connect with external organizations to advocate on behalf of specific communities, or the entire student body.
  • Establishing relationship with other Student Unions to work on improving the organization and better serve the students.
  • Reach out to Sheridan’s diverse communities to receive feedback, direction, and guidance on how to set organizational advocacy goals; and
  • Work with the President to maintain, update, and expand the SSU Advocacy Policies to reflect our goals and priorities for all Sheridan Students
  • Create initiatives to expand campus identity and a sense of community within Sheridan.
  • Build awareness to the activities, services, and facilities available to students on campus, both within the college and the SSU.
  • Advocate for the improvement and development of new facilities, services and opportunities for students on campus.
  • Pursue external partnerships that will benefit the Sheridan community and improve the services and products that the Student Union offers; and
  • Connect students to others within the Sheridan community to help facilitate an inclusive, interconnected environment of support and unity.

* Faculty Engagement & Student Wellness

The Vice President of Academics at a student union typically plays a crucial role in advocating for and overseeing matters related to academic policies, programs, and student success within Sheridan college. In addition, Vice President of Academics will be the head of faculty engagement, connecting faculty with faculty, and students with faculty.

Specific Duties:

  • Supporting students academically through Academic Appeals
  • Directing students to available services such as tutoring or Academic Advisors, being well-informed of these resources, and finding new resources to bring to Sheridan students.
  • Develop wellness strategies and initiatives to support Sheridan students in collaboration with the college, or independently.
  • Connect with Vice President of Academics from other universities and colleges across Canada for discussion about academic issues related to students
  • Represent students by being informed about concerns, challenges, and issues that students face to be successful academically.
  • Planning and coordinating academic events/projects that help student be prepared for their academic journey at Sheridan
  • Prepare the social media content related to academics such as planning blog topics, or planning video content to promote available resources/departments at Sheridan
  • Supporting different faculties at Sheridan for coordination of events/projects/initiatives

The VP of International Affairs will represent all international students at Sheridan and help support and further their interests as students and newcomers to Canada. This will not focus on one specific demographic, but all international students from the various countries that they call home. Their work will include advocating for the betterment of the international community, and bringing cultural events to celebrate and educate on the wide variety of cultures present at Sheridan.

Specific Duties:

  • Ensure an informed perspective both personally and as an organization to represent all international students at Sheridan;
  • Connect with the international student communities throughout Sheridan to understand their specific needs and concerns;
  • Give input on strategic planning and goal setting from an international lens to ensure equitable consideration for all students;
  • Coordinate cultural events throughout the year to recognize cultural holidays, festivals, and celebration;
  • Develop educational initiatives to educate and inform others of the various cultures and backgrounds of Sheridan students;
  • Conduct outreach to external community organizations to further inform our advocacy for international students and create partnerships to support our communities; and
  • Alongside the President, represent the diverse international students on behalf of the SSU to external organizations, and groups

Qualifications

A successful candidate will have:

  • Excellent verbal, and written communication skills;
  • Confidence in public speaking to groups of students and while hosting events;
  • An ability to conduct themselves in a professional manner;
  • A flexible schedule to be able to work a variety of hours during regular business hours (between 8am and 6pm);
  • A positive and respectful attitude;
  • A strong, creative mind to create new and innovative campus initiatives;
  • Familiarity and aptitude with popular social media platforms;
  • A self-motivated work-ethic with the ability to work independently and in a team environment; and
  • The ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with honesty and integrity
