We currently have a full time opportunity for a Biomedical Engineering Technologist.
How Biomedical Engineering Technologist support our teams at Grand River Hospital:
Monday – Friday: 7.5 Hour Shifts (37.5 hours per week)
8:00 AM - 04:00 PM, rotational on-call (on weekends & stat holidays) as per scheduling.
The Biomedical Technologist will provide services and support on medical equipment of the Grand River Hospital, Freeport, St. Mary’s General Hospital, and/or its associated/partner campus (as required). In addition, the successful candidate will be responsible for repair, preventative maintenance, monitoring quality & risk management programs, consultation, installation and in-service education.
The Biomedical Technologist is responsible for (Other duties, as assigned):
- Equipment Maintenance and Repair:
- Inspect, maintain, and repair medical equipment and devices to ensure they are functioning correctly and safely.
- Perform routine calibrations and preventative maintenance tasks on various medical instruments.
- Installation and Configuration:
- Install and set up new medical equipment and ensure it is correctly configured and integrated into existing systems.
- Assist in the setup and testing of equipment for clinical use.
- Technical Support:
- Provide technical support to healthcare staff on the proper use and maintenance of medical devices.
- Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to medical technology and equipment.
- Work closely with IT team on medical device integration with hospital networking system.
- Quality Assurance:
- Conduct quality assurance tests to ensure equipment meets regulatory standards and performs accurately.
- Monitor equipment performance and implement necessary adjustments or repairs.
- Documentation and Reporting:
- Maintain detailed records of equipment maintenance, repairs, and calibration.
- Prepare and submit reports on equipment performance, incidents, and compliance with safety standards.
- Regulatory Compliance:
- Ensure that all equipment and practices comply with relevant health and safety regulations and standards.
- Stay updated on new regulations and industry standards to maintain compliance.
- Collaboration and Communication:
- Work closely with medical staff, engineers, and other healthcare professionals to address equipment needs and concerns.
- Communicate effectively with vendors and manufacturers regarding equipment issues, upgrades, or repairs.
- Training and Education:
- Train new staff on the operation and safety procedures for medical equipment.
- Stay informed about advancements in biomedical technology and incorporate new practices as necessary or required.
- Inventory Management:
- Manage the inventory of medical equipment, parts, and supplies.
- Order replacement parts and equipment as needed.
- Safety and Risk Management:
- Identify potential safety hazards related to medical equipment and update department lead. Implement/suggest measures to mitigate risks.
- Ensure that all safety protocols are followed during equipment operation and maintenance.
- Manage equipment recalls, safety alerts or equipment advisories. Assist department lead, as and when required.
At Grand River Hospital, the Biomedical Engineering Technologist has:
- A thorough onboarding and orientation program.
- Must have a Biomedical Engineering Diploma with 8 years of experience or Degree with 3 years of experience in healthcare field.
- Must be a Certified Engineering Technologist (CET) with the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT).
- Certification as a Biomedical Engineering Technologist (CBET) preferred.
- Must have experience with repair, maintenance and calibration of anaesthesia workstations, ventilators.
- Must have experience with repair, maintenance and calibration of Patient Monitors, Defibrillators, Syringe and PCA Pumps.
- Must have hands on experience and sound knowledge of other medical devices used in a hospital setup.
- Preferred: experience with x-ray devices, endoscopes, etc.
- Must have basic IT Networking knowledge or knowledge of Biomedical Device Integration (BMDI) with hospital networks.
- Ability to understand the links and inter-connectivity of various electronic systems.
- Sound working knowledge, understanding and ability to service and calibrate specialized and sophisticated electro-medical systems such as patient monitoring devices, anesthesia workstations, infusion pumps, ventilators, etc.;
- Working knowledge of Ontario Hydro Electrical Code and CSA standards, pertaining to healthcare equipment.
- Demonstrated ability to plan and prioritize tasks, anticipate problems and deviations with daily or monthly plans to meet assigned and personal objectives.
- Knowledgeable with electronics and troubleshooting, with in-depth knowledge of applicable safety codes and standards.
- A high-level understanding of anatomy, physiology, and patient care.
- Good communications and customer relations skills.
- Ability to work independently.
- Good attendance record.
