Position Overview:

This position is responsible for providing public education and raising awareness on a variety of City programs and initiatives, including but not limited to waste reduction, wildlife awareness, and water management initiatives and services. Working under the general direction of a Supervisor, employees in this class will tour the City educating citizens in a variety of forums and locales, including elementary and secondary schools, malls, and parks as well as participate in any number of local community events along with delivering products and promotional material door-to-door. The incumbent exercises some independence of judgement and action in the performance of assigned duties within established guidelines, practices, and procedures, while unusual or complex problems are referred to a supervisor who reviews work performance in terms of accuracy, completeness, conformance with established practices and procedures.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Checks, enters, compiles, analyzes, and verifies data on computerized operations management systems.
  2. Conducts site inspections; produces related reports; and identifies, investigates, and advises supervisors of variances.
  3. Provides information to help City staff and residents improve their knowledge and understanding of City bylaws, programs, and initiatives such as waste reduction, wildlife awareness, water management, and other eco-related functions.
  4. Assists with the developing and implementing a variety of communication approaches to support solid waste, wildlife awareness, and water management programs for use in schools, malls, parks, radio, television, and City-sponsored events throughout the term of the assignment.
  5. Speaks to City residents to encourage and promote awareness of City’s communication and engagement strategies and initiatives; assists in development of key messaging.
  6. Prepares, coordinates, and attends city-hosted and citizen-led communication events and engagement processes; displays and distributes educational material; assists in the development, maintenance, and updating of social media and web content.
Qualifications:
  • Completion of Grade 12 and some post-graduation College and or University courses in environmental studies, communications, social media, public relations, or marketing and sound related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Driver’s License for the Province of British Columbia – Class 5.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, including presenting information to the public through various mediums.
  • Ability to prepare written correspondence and reports, including presentations to management, the public, and the media.
  • Ability to understand and carry out effectively, oral and written instructions and to maintain records.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
