Pelee Island Transportation Company operates the Pelee Islander ferries between Pelee Island and the Mainland from April to December.

We seek to fill one Mechanical Assistant position working a 7 day on/off rotation. The company provides meals and accommodation is available on the vessel during your work rotation. Duties include maintaining a clear and safe work environment, assisting the Chief Engineer with transfer of fuel, pumping liquids, painting and cleaning engine room areas and machinery, following safety policies and procedures, carrying out emergency duties and participating in drills, and receiving and storing ship stores.

This position requires a valid Marine Emergency Duties certification.

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE, AND ABILITITES

· Aptitude for manual work, interest in systems operations and technologies and interest in working on board a ship at sea.

· General knowledge, understanding and experience in operating, maintaining and repairing engines, propulsion systems and ship apparatus.

· Marine Emergency Duties certification and Engine Room Rating certification (preferred).

· Valid Transport Canada Marine Medical Certificate.

· Valid Canadian passport; Canadian citizenship or landed immigrant status and must be able to enter the USA.

· Ability to perform high physical demands including:

o Regular need to climb stairs

o Lifting up to 50lbs

o Ability to stand for 2 hours at a time

o Ability to climb up to 12ft ladders

· Ability to read, write, understand and speak English.

· Preferred applicants possess initiative, are analytical problem solvers, have a team-oriented work style and a track record for safety at work

· Personal Protective Equipment (boots, pants, eye and ear protective wear)

EFFORT – PHYSICAL/SENSORY DEMANDS

Work involves physical effort, bending, crouching, climbing, walking, crawling, and working in awkward positions, at heights and in confined spaces. Work requires handling materials, pushing, pulling and lifting up to 50 pounds. Regular exposure to noise, dirt, fumes, chemicals, hazardous substances and equipment requires the use of personal protective equipment. Must be able to work long hours while maintaining continuous sea watches during the day or while performing preventive maintenance during after hours. Ability to stand for two hours at a time.
