The Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) is a not-for-profit organization tasked with the safe, long-term management of Canada’s used nuclear fuel inside a deep geological repository, in a manner that protects people and the environment for generations to come.

Founded in 2002, the NWMO has been guided for 20 years by a dedicated team of world-class scientists, engineers and Indigenous Knowledge Holders that are developing innovative and collaborative solutions for nuclear waste management. Canada’s plan will only proceed in an area with informed and willing hosts, where the municipality, First Nation and Métis communities, and others in the area are working together to implement it. The NWMO plans to select a site in 2024, and two areas remain in our site selection process: the Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation-Ignace area in northwestern Ontario and the Saugeen Ojibway Nation-South Bruce area in southern Ontario.

Sr. Engineer/Scientist/Technical Officer – Mining and Repository Engineering

(Employment Status: Fulltime)

Position Location: Toronto Head Office – 2 St. Clair Avenue East

Job Summary:

In the used nuclear fuel repository, fuel is stored in robust metal containers. These containers will be encapsulated inside a highly compacted bentonite clay buffer system. The NWMO is undergoing a site selection effort in both crystalline and sedimentary host rock communities.

The Senior Engineer/Scientist/Technical Officer – Mining and Repository Engineering will be responsible for contributing to the reference underground design and engineering elements of site investigation. Key duties include managing contracts that work on the conceptual and detailed design and its inputs; coordinating the geomechanical and field engineering activities; staying up to date on proof testing and international developments for the design and construction elements of underground geological repositories and participating in NWMO public engagement activities as required.

This is aProgression-In Place role.Applicants with lesser experience or qualifications may be considered for aposition at a lower level commensurate with their experience.


  • Provide technical expertise, advice and input to the design and construction elements for a deep underground geological repository, including surface and underground infrastructure.
  • Coordinate geomechanical investigation activities as they relate to design of underground repositories and surface facilities.
  • Participate in the development and issuance of contracting documents (EOI’s & RFP’s) and evaluation and selection of contractors.
  • Manage contracts for conceptual design, detailed design and field design activities.
  • Manage contractors and their subcontractors:
    • Interface with contractors to monitor performance against work plans and schedules.
    • Participate in contract budget submission, schedules, estimates, and changes.
    • Ensure design basis and associated requirements remain valid through all deliverables.
  • Contribute as required to internal committees and tasks to gather requirements for the design and ensure consensus prior to implementation of design changes.
  • Produce reports and other documents on design status, work activities and project status.
  • Appear before government authorities, agencies, regulatory bodies and legislative hearings as a technical expert on repository design activities.
  • Keep abreast of developments on proof testing and international developments for the design and construction elements on the deep underground geological repositories through technical publications, contacts with internal and external experts in the field, and conference presentations.
  • Ensure all work activities and programs reflect an awareness of and compliance with applicable regulations and with the divisional and customer safety program.
  • Participate in NWMO public engagement activities.
  • Perform other duties as required.

  • Requires a 4-year university degree in mining, geological, environmental, mineral or civil engineering.
  • Requires at least 6 years’ experience in the mining industry.
  • Experience with construction and mining practices and techniques, including mining design/CAD software (Deswik, Datamine, Ventsim), and application of Ontario Mining Regulations in design.
  • Demonstrated ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team and interact with external contractors.
  • Experience in planning and coordinating geomechanical investigations as they relate to repository design and design of building foundations.
  • Experience in project and/or study management within the discipline, including plan development, resourcing, schedule tracking, contract management, risk management, and problem resolution.
  • Experience in communicating effectively in both oral and written form including excellent professional writing and presentation skills.
  • Experience in underground services infrastructure design (e.g., ventilation, dewatering, etc.).
  • Experience with shaft sinking projects.
  • Experience with greenfields construction or development projects and/or involvement in regulatory submissions.
  • Experience with site water management and infrastructure design.

You must be eligible to work in Canada and must be able to meet security clearance requirements.
