We currently have an opportunity for a full time Genetic Counsellor within GRCC Prevention/Genetic Counselling Team.

How Genetic Counsellor support our teams at Grand River Hospital:

  • The genetic counselor is responsible for providing consultation, assessment, initiation and follow-up of genetic testing for individuals and/or families referred to the service. She/he will participate in the planning and ongoing development of the preventive oncology program ensuring the vision and goals of the program are congruent with those of the Grand River Regional Cancer Centre (GRRCC).
  • The genetic counselor will provide leadership within the cancer program in the area of prevention and screening, provide education and support both internally to the integrated cancer program and externally within the GRRCC referral area. She/he will liaise with colleagues provincially, nationally and internationally ensuring that the practices within the preventive oncology program meet provincial and national standards and best practice.
  • Case load consists primarily of referrals for hereditary cancer syndromes/cancer risk assessment, working with a medical oncologist on site, and includes assessment for hereditary breast/ovarian cancer syndrome, hereditary colorectal cancer syndromes including HNPCC and FAP, as well as rare familial cancer syndromes.
  • Contributes to ensuring there is a safe environment for patients, staff and visitors.

At Grand River Hospital, The Genetic Counsellor Has

  • Master’s of Science in Genetic Counseling required
  • Minimum 1-2 years experience in genetic counseling preferred
  • Canadian Association of Genetic Counselors and/or American Board of Genetic Counseling certification (or eligibility for certification at next examination) required
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required
  • Ability to work independently as well as within an interdisciplinary team required
  • Excellent organizational skills required
  • Experience in program development preferred
  • Experience in patient and family education required
  • Good attendance record
  • Possesses knowledge of epidemiological principles, statistics, microbiology and infectious diseases.
  • Possesses knowledge of and utilizes the principles of continuous quality improvement.
  • Works independently and is self-motivated and self-directed while possessing the ability to work within a team in a collaborative manner.
  • Demonstrates expert verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrates skill in computer databases (uses spreadsheets, Word, PowerPoint, Internet and literature searches, email comfortably).
  • Flexible and able to work effectively with the team with minimal supervision.
