Job Description:

The incumbent reports to a Renewable Resource Officer III. The incumbent is responsible for the delivery of Departmental wildlife, environment and forest management programs and services at the area level. This includes resource development programs delivery; undertaking wildlife management and enforcement activities; environmental monitoring, protection and integration initiatives; forest and fire management projects; and the associated supervision of permanent, seasonal and casual personnel and management of fixed assets.

  1. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Well-grounded technical writing skills (English) are important to communicate Departmental positions on resource management issues to stakeholder groups (i.e., community based resource organizations), other agencies (i.e., DFO, Justice) and to fulfill Departmental-reporting requirements (i.e., enforcement reports).
  • Well-grounded verbal skills (English) are important to communicate in a variety of settings, explaining positions with stakeholder groups, creating partnerships and exchanging information
  • Ability to speak and write in an applicable aboriginal language are considered assets
  • Management skills to plan, organize and co-ordinate multiple and divergent activities with other organizations within the Area
  • Human resource management and supervision skills
  • Experience with resource harvesting activities in remote northern communities is an asset
  • Knowledge of skills required living on the land including navigation skills for inter community and trap line travel.
  • Detailed knowledge of resource management practices and techniques
  • Detailed knowledge of resource development techniques
  • Knowledge of forest and fire management techniques
  • Knowledge in applying acts and regulations, monitoring and enforcement techniques
  • Knowledge of computer software including word processing, database and spreadsheet programs

Typically, the above qualifications would be attained by:

  • Graduation from a recognized 2 year College Diploma program (i.e. Renewable Resource Management Technology) or similar program; and 2 years experience in the renewable resource sector with related management and administration experience. Living and working on the land and land travel in isolated conditions with experienced individuals provides essential training required in this occupation. A Permit to possess Firearms and a valid Driver's License and a satisfactory criminal record check are required.
  • Departmental firearm qualification is required within one month of employment. Opportunities to practice and become proficient will be provided on the job.

The Candidate must meet departmental firearms qualification requirements

The incumbent must be able to pass Departmental Fitness Standards.

Salary Information

The salary for this position starts at $44.83 per hour (approximately $87,418.50 per annum) plus an annual Northern Allowance.
