Reporting to the Terminals & Stevedoring division leadership, and managing a small team, the Director, Health, Safety, Quality & Environment (HSQE) is responsible for the strategic oversight and management of Western Stevedoring’s HSQE programs. The Director is accountable for the implementation, execution, and maintenance of HSQE initiatives and policies for the Terminal & Stevedoring (T&S) Division, influencing a safety culture that is embraced across all operations. Liaising with a vast array of important stakeholders including the BC Maritime Employers Association (BCMEA), International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU), Transport Canada (TC), Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC), and WorkSafeBC, the Director plays a critical leadership role, and provides consistent direction, motivation, support, and constructive feedback to both the HSQE and Operations teams and supports the Senior Leadership Team by offering expert guidance and ensuring proper compliance.
The ideal candidate brings a solid track record of implementing progressive health, safety, quality, & environmental policies and procedures within unionized environments. They will be driven by excellence and best practices and bring a service-centric approach to their work and that of their team. Experience working collaboratively and constructively with Operations is critical, as is the proven ability to respond to the needs of the organization positively and proactively. The chosen candidate will be a strategic thinker who is passionate about HSQE, ensuring it drives business results. In addition, they will possess strong leadership behaviors to lead, influence, coach, and support colleagues across Western Stevedoring, as well as their direct team.
