Job Description

Position Overview: Reporting to the Manager of Professional Practice, the Nurse Practitioner (NP), Acute Pain and Preoperative Services (APS), is a member of the interdisciplinary team and works closely with anaesthesiology, surgical, and professional practice teams. The NP provides direct patient care, consultation and coordinates preoperative care in the Pre-Admission Clinic and acute pain services for adult and paediatric populations. The role also leads the implementation of the Best Practice Spotlight Organization (BPSO) Best Practice Guideline (BPG) and advances pain-related knowledge translation across SHN. Based primarily at the General Hospital, the NP provides consultative services at the other SHN hospitals as needed. SHN NPs function in an expanded role demonstrating a high level of autonomy and expert skill to support the care needs of the patients and to educate and disseminate evidence-based practices for pain management. The APS NP will empower the interprofessional team through education, clinical support and the development of standards of care related to acute pain management.

Responsibilities

  • Practice in accordance with the Regulated Health Professions Act, the Practice Standards set by the College of Nurses of Ontario, and the standards set out for Nurse Practitioners (RN-EC)
  • Assess, diagnose, intervene, monitor, educate, advocate, plan, implement and evaluate the needs of patients in collaboration with the interprofessional team
  • Uses Best Practice Guidelines, theoretical and clinical expertise in pain management to facilitate the provision of direct and indirect nursing care to patients with complex pain management needs within the organization
  • Diagnose, treat, and prescribe within the scope of RN, extended class, while adhering to evidence-based practice
  • Engage in teaching with patients and families effectively utilising the teach-back method to promote uptake
  • Demonstrate knowledge of analgesic drugs, the pharmacology, evidence-based protocols, and experience implementing and monitoring effectiveness of analgesia for a variety of complex pain
  • Performs as a consultant, expert and resource for pain management
  • Take a leadership role in quality improvement initiatives, program development and evaluation, both locally and regionally
  • Collect and analyse data to evaluate and improve programs
  • Develop curriculums, resources and tools for nursing education
  • Delivering, coordinating and participating in education and professional development activities or programs
  • Participate in research activities in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team, as appropriate
  • Actively engage patients and families in the plan of care, respecting their values and beliefs and collaboratively carrying out the care plan

Requirements

  • Master of Science in Nursing (MScN) and completed an approved NP Education Program
  • Current registration in the Extended Class with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) in good standing
  • Completed CNO council approved controlled substance education program
  • Active memberships in relevant professional organizations (RNAO, OPANA, ORNAC)
  • Current BCLS and ACLS 5 years of Surgery, and 2 years of Nurse Practitioner experience
  • Experience in mentoring, precepting and/or teaching
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise independent judgment and to assess situations and problems efficiently and effectively
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work well within an inter-professional team and to foster effective working relationships
  • Proven patient and family centred skills
  • Demonstrated critical thinking, conflict resolution, problem recognition and resolution skills
