Aurea Technologies Inc. is seeking a full-time Mechanical Engineer with a dual focus on product design and manufacturing optimization to join its innovative team at Burnside Business Park in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. As a leader in portable renewable energy solutions, Aurea has developed the world’s most compact and portable wind turbines for off-grid use. The successful candidate will bridge the gap between front-end product design and back-end production efficiency. Your main goals will be to improve how our current products are designed and assembled, so they’re easier and more cost-effective to make, and to design, test, and launch new accessories that complement our turbines.
Responsibilities:
- COGS & Assembly Optimization: Analyze and optimize the Shine 2.0 design to improve manufacturability, assembly efficiency, and reduce BOM costs usingDesign for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) principles.
- Accessory Product Development: Lead the end-to-end design, 3D CAD modeling, and prototyping of new accessory products that complement our core wind turbine product.
- New Product Introduction (NPI): Successfully transition accessory designs from prototypes into finished products ready for production, creating assembly workflows and production line guidelines.
- Production Readiness: Own BOM generation, tolerance stack-up analysis, fastener selections, and manufacturing documentation to ensure low-cost, high-yield production.
- Field Testing : Plan and run tests on our products, including hands-on testing outdoors in cold, wet, and windy conditions, sometimes at remote sites. Collect data and troubleshoot issues.
- Supplier & Component Sourcing: Interface with suppliers and our internal procurement team to source cost-effective components with proper technical specifications, and ensure timely production integration.
- Continuous Improvement: Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve mechanical design bottlenecks impacting either field performance or factory production efficiency.
- Compliance & Standards: Support product compliance and documentation for relevant certifications (e.g., CE, UL, UKCA).
Requirements:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution.
- Professional Designation: Must have a P.Eng. designation that is registered with Engineers Nova Scotia.
- Experience: 4+ years of experience in mechanical design, value engineering, or product development.
- Technical Proficiency: High proficiency with 3D CAD software (SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Creo, or Inventor) and strict version control practices.
- Able to conduct structural analysis using calculations to estimate deflection, shear, and bending. Also familiar with limit state design.
- Manufacturing Knowledge: Deep understanding of cost drivers in manufacturing processes (e.g., injection molding, casting, CNC machining, sheet metal fabrication).
- Knowledge of adhesives (ex., Loctite) and waterproofing is considered an asset.
- Documentation Skills: Expert drawing interpretation, tolerance analysis, and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
- Competency in designing for electronic enclosures and equipment.
- Familiarity with FEA, heat simulation, and computer-aided fatigue analysis is considered a strong asset.
- Field Adaptability: Must be able and willing to travel and work in remote environments for rugged field testing.
- Asset: Previous experience in cleantech, outdoor consumer electronics, or rugged hardware accessories is a strong asset.
Additional Attributes:
- Proven track record of successfully reducing product costs (BOM/COGS) without sacrificing quality or performance.
- Organized, self-driven, and highly solution-oriented in a fast-paced hardware environment.
- Strong communication, documentation, and vendor-management skills.
Applicants must already be located in the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) area and legally eligible to work in Canada . This is a full-time on-site role in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. We appreciate every application. However, only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.
