Locum Paediatric Neurosurgeon The closing date is 01 February 2026 Applications are invited to apply for the post in the Department of Paediatric Neurosurgery based at the Oxford Children’s Hospital, John Radcliffe Hospital, Headington, Oxford. The vacancy has arisen due to illness of the incumbent. The successful applicant will join a team of four substantive Consultants. Commitments will include routine care of emergency and elective neurosurgical patients, covering the full spectrum of paediatric cranial and spinal neurosurgical pathologies. The distribution of specialist patients may be adjusted depending on the skills of the successful candidate. Appropriate administrative support will be provided. The department offers a dynamic training programme with links to children’s specialist services. The postholder will also be involved in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate medical students, training neurosurgical specialist trainees, and engaging in joint teaching and audit with the adult neurosurgery colleagues. Job responsibilities and duties Primary care at the John Radcliffe Hospital with willingness to work at any of the Trust’s locations across the county, including Banbury or Witney if needed. Clinical work within a team-based approach: joint ward rounds every weekday morning and a 1:4 on‑call rota with prospective cover. All paediatric neurosurgery patients admitted on the postholder’s take become their patients. Teaching and research: participate in undergraduate clinical teaching, junior doctor training, multidisciplinary teaching, and clinical examinations. Contribute to the department’s research agenda, ideally with postgraduate research training to Masters or PhD level. Clinical governance: attend and contribute to audit and clinical care meetings, incident reporting, complaints review, risk management, CPD and evidence‑based guidelines development. Personal and professional development: maintain up‑to‑date knowledge through appraisal and revalidation; study leave granted for relevant postgraduate training and CME courses, within Trust terms and conditions. Management and administrative duties: work within Trust policies and procedures, manage clinical service under lead clinician direction, and coordinate resource use with prior agreement from the Trust. Risk management and health & safety compliance: support the Trust’s Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 obligations, Infection Prevention and Control policies, and relevant Trust procedures. Person Specification Full GMC with licence to practise. Must have CCT (or equivalent) and be on the GMC Specialist Register in the appropriate specialty at the time of appointment. Residence within 30 minutes or ten miles of John Radcliffe Hospital, unless written approval for a greater distance is granted by the Medical Director. Must ensure the employing organisation can contact the postholder immediately at any time during on‑call periods. Defence cover optional but recommended for private and Category 2 work and GMC disciplinary proceedings.
