Our client who are one of the top Mechanical Contractors are looking to hire a full-time Lead Estimator (Mechanical and Electrical Quantity Surveyor in the Industrial Construction Industry) for the Windsor location.
Salary: $110k minimum (dependent on experience)
Location: Windsor (on-site)
Role type: Full-time | Permanent
Job Responsibilities for Lead Estimator (Mechanical and Electrical) position:
- Develop and oversee the execution of design and shop drawing processes and manage resource distribution to ensure accurate drawing packages are issued as needed for construction projects to maintain budgeted cost and schedule
- Develop estimating processes & procedures that consider the cross-departmental interdependencies to allow for improved overall project performance and decision making
- Provide support to the President in evaluating the feasibility of a construction project and the proforma criteria, including completing or providing input to preliminary construction estimates needed for a go/no-go decision
- Provide recommendations for mitigating high probability risks
- Regularly attend to project sites to gain understanding of construction processes and norms that impact construction build sequence and schedule
- Develop construction budgets for initial drawing sets and identify potential risks to cost or schedule to allow for reasonable contingency to be carried. This includes material take offs, drawing comparisons, gaining quotes, developing general conditions, assess rental & warranty costs
- Price (and re-price) changes to draft construction budgets with the President and General Manager to develop proposed construction budget to owner
- Following project approval, oversee preparation of material take offs and detailed pricing alternatives as scopes of work and/or drawing sets change and identify opportunities for budget changes elsewhere to absorb any new or unexpected expenditures
- Establish and manage the tendering process in collaboration with the operations team
- Work closely with Design, Procurement and Project Teams, develop and maintain database of reliable historical project costing information that allows for improving future project budgets
- Hire, coach, and actively develop a team of construction estimating professionals with a focus on growing each team member for a successful long-term career
- Oversee the work of the team and hold self and individual contributors accountable for performance of tasks and required outcomes for the department
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities of a Lead Estimator:
- Proficient in Microsoft Office suite, including Excel, Access, Word, Outlook.
- Proficiency in using cost estimating software for quantity surveying / estimating to create accurate and detailed estimates, Accubid preferred.
- Ability to read and interpret MEP and Electrical construction design drawings, schematics, and technical specifications.
- Strong communication and negotiation skills to interact with all stakeholders.
- Excellent time management skills to meet project deadlines.
- Financial management skills for cost estimation and budgeting.
- Knowledge of local and international building regulations, mechanical standards, and industry’s best practices.
- Technical knowledge of large-scale industrial electrical and mechanical systems including HVAC, process piping, refrigeration, fire suppression systems, and water treatment systems.
Experience for Lead Estimator (Mechanical and Electrical) position:
- 5+ years of Canadian hands-on experience with cost estimation for mechanical and electrical systems in the industrial, commercial and institutional (ICI) construction industry (large-scale projects)
- Experience handling cost estimation / budgeting, project management / coordination, contract administration, risk management, value engineering, communication / reporting, quality control / assurance, and sustainability / environmental considerations.
- Degree or diploma in mechanical or electrical engineering, building services engineering, quantity surveying, construction management, or electrical engineering technology, an asset
NOTE: Please note that this is not an entry-level position. Previous experience in construction cost estimation (both Mechanical and Electrical) is required.
