Role Responsibilities

Reporting to the Director of Strategic Forest Initiatives & Policy, the Senior Policy Lead provides leadership in coordinating and developing forest policy initiatives within the Division, across the Ministry, and throughout the province. This will involve leveraging your strong project management skills to design, plan, lead, and evaluate major initiatives for the Division. Your role also includes spearheading research and analysis to generate evidence informed recommendations for decision-makers. You will be responsible for fostering an effective policy system for all of the Forestry Division. 

Within the Forestry Division, the Senior Policy Lead plays a pivotal role in managing complex processes related to the use and management of crown forests, including wildfire. Operating within a politically charged and technically demanding environment, you will serve as a change agent engaging with various stakeholders such as the forest sector, non-government organizations, academia, Indigenous communities, and government teams. This position is esteemed as the senior policy expert for the entire division, serving as a mentor to other policy professionals and to subject matter experts.

Your responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Providing specialized expertise for the development, implementation, and evaluation of legislation and regulations concerning crown forests and wildfires in Alberta.  Leading, planning, and project management services to support Divisional initiatives. This involves delivering high-quality strategic policy research, analysis, advice, recommendations, and issues management in a timely and effective manner. Providing policy advice to Executive members, program areas, and team members regarding the Division's legislative, regulatory, and policy landscape. Facilitating the timely approval of policies through government decision-making processes, ensuring alignment with ministry policy objectives. Ensuring effective communication and engagement of the division's objectives, policies, and initiatives.
