AECOM’s Burnaby office is currently seeking a Junior Aquatic Biologist to join our team of young and dynamic biologists and environmental planners within our Environment Business Line. Our team supports projects across western Canada and the north. We are looking for a junior biologist to support the work we do for government and industry including preliminary environmental studies, detailed impact assessments, mitigation and habitat enhancement studies and applications for permits and approvals to advance projects. Recent projects include conducting aquatic studies to support upgrades for mine operations, habitat enhancement studies to support port development, environmental assessments, permitting and environmental monitoring for wastewater treatment plants, permitting for sewer system upgrades and drinking water delivery system upgrades, studies to support the environmental assessment and permitting for the remediation of abandoned mine sites for the provincial and federal governments and invasive plant surveys for a natural gas pipeline.

The job responsibilities include but not limited to the following:

  • Conducting background research on aquatic resources
  • Participating in fieldwork associated with environmental assessments including biological inventories for aquatic resources, e.g. water quality, benthic invertebrates, periphyton, and fish
  • Supporting the preparation of environmental approvals and permits required for projects including Federal, Provincial and Municipal permits
  • Supporting and participating in construction environmental monitoring
  • Participating in data compilation and analysis, conducting environmental assessments, identifying mitigation measures and report writing.
  • Contributing to broader, interdisciplinary teams on a wide variety of major industrial and government projects
  • Interacting with other AECOM offices across Canada
  • Out of town travel to participate in field programs, sometimes in remote locations
  • Preparing health and safety and quality management plans
  • Participating in proposal preparation
Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Environmental Science, Forestry, Ecology, or Conservation Biology
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree considered an asset
  • 2 or more years of relevant project experience (Western Canadian experience preferred)
  • Experience collecting data in the field, including knowledge of BC RISC protocols for fish and fish habitat, water quality, etc. Experience with terrestrial ecosystems and data collection an asset.
  • Environmental monitoring experience
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Ability to manage time effectively
  • Willingness to work flexible hours under a variety of conditions including remote field locations
  • Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Word and experience with GIS software
  • Experience with statistical software
  • Possess and maintain a Class 5 drivers’ license required and experience driving on Resource Roads
  • First Aid, ATV/UTV/Argo, and other safety courses an asset
  • Eligible for or registered with the BC College of Applied Biology as a B.I.T.
