Duties

Duties include (but are not limited to):

Conducts scientific analyses and investigations for diagnostic and testing purposes.

Contributes to the planning and conduct of development and validation of new analytical methods and laboratory practices that support CFIAs monitoring, surveillance, inspection and research programs.

Collects, analyses and interprets data for, and authorizes results to CFIA employees, other government organizations and private sector organizations.

Troubleshoots, investigates, and solves performance issues with equipment and/or instrumentation.

Produces scientific data, reports and information on laboratory methods and practices and aids in the preparation and/or delivery of results in the form of presentations, reports, and/or papers to colleagues, management and/or clients.

Contributes to project teams, working groups or committees within CFIA to advance the work of the unit.

Provides technical and procedural guidance and troubleshooting advice to laboratory staff with respect to residue chemistry and extraction techniques from food.

Develops training modules and delivers training sessions on procedures for scientific analyses, instrument operation and maintenance and laboratory quality assurance systems, such as ISO , to professional and technical staff as well as students.

Intent of the process

The intent is to establish an inventory of candidates to draw from when vacancies arise for current and future needs at the CFIA Saskatoon Laboratory, Centre for Veterinary Drug Residues, located in Saskatoon, SK. Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis as long as the poster is active. Applications may be pulled from the Inventory for further assessment at any time.

This inventory may be used to staff positions with similar qualifications, various conditions of employment and/or various tenures including term appointments, indeterminate appointments, acting appointments and/or assignments.

ESSENTIAL EDUCATION

EEd1: A Bachelors Degree in a natural, physical or applied science, with a major, or specialization in chemistry, or related discipline relevant to the position, from a recognized post-secondary institution.

Applicants submitting education credentials from a non-Canadian institution are responsible for obtaining certification that these credentials are the equivalent of the Canadian education level required for the position.

ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE

EE1: Significant experience* in laboratory setting conducting extraction procedures for the purpose of chemical analyses.

EE2: Significant* and recent** experience in the operation and maintenance of LC-MS systems.

EE3: Recent experience** in the analysis of and interpretation of data from various chemistry instrumentation and compiling that data to provide and report analytical results.

*Significant is defined as experience associated with having performed a broad range of related activities which could normally be acquired over a period of approximately two years or more.

**Recent experience is defined as experience acquired within the last five years.

Essential qualifications, such as competencies, abilities and skills, knowledge and personal suitability, will vary depending on the position being staffed. Essential qualifications will be assessed by the manager prior to an appointment being made.

ASSET EDUCATION

ASSET EXPERIENCE

AEx1: Experience in planning, organizing, designing and delivery of scientific projects.

AEx2: Experience working within a quality management system (ISO, etc)

AEx3: Experience conducting chemical extractions from food matrices such as meats, milk, honey.

AEx4: Experience organizing data for statistical analyses using Excel for the purpose of evaluating and interpreting analytical data.

AEx5: Experience in the use, maintenance and troubleshooting of equipment in chromatography (HPLC and GC) and a variety of detectors (FID, MS, UV, DAD, FLD, MS/MS, for example) for the purpose of chemical analyses.

AEx6: Experience in writing documents such as standard operating procedures.

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance - Applicants who have not lived in Canada for the past five (or ten, depending on security level) years may be required to submit a police certificate from each country in which they have lived for six months or more during this period, as well as other documentation required for the security screening process. Failure to submit this documentation if requested will eliminate the application from further consideration.
