Role Responsibilities


Reporting to the Director, Building Design & Spatial Technology, the Senior Design Architect is the Ministerial authority on architectural design as it relates to Government of Alberta (GOA) owned and supported infrastructure projects. 


As the Senior Design Architect, you will conduct research to apply innovative, sustainable design, provide technical expertise for advanced building facilities, and collaborate with technical experts to achieve design excellence in Alberta's facilities through the Design Review Process. In this position you will be the departmental resource in architectural practice, code and bylaw and the primary advocate for functional, flexible, durable, and sustainable design within Technical Services and Procurement Branch. 

Responsibilities:


The primary responsibilities for the Senior Design Architect position’s includes, but are not limited to:

Conducting design reviews on consultant project submissions, coordination of technical input, and balancing the priorities of time and cost with quality and innovation.  Leading and promoting the transfer of knowledge to stakeholders regarding the importance of appropriate design responses that effectively and responsibly meet the needs of Albertans. Transferring knowledge of building technologies and methodologies to stakeholders and industry. Anticipating and responding to clients' evolving needs and contributing to the technical centre of excellence for the department, partner ministries, health authorities, school boards, and post-secondary institutions in providing leading-edge architectural guidance, research, and technical development. Maintaining and offering professional practice and industry best practice advice to clients and stakeholders including project teams and senior leadership. Conducting architectural Design Reviews on project submissions to confirm compliance with applicable codes, standards, and guidelines, including the Technical Design Requirements for Alberta Infrastructure Facilities (TDR). Advocating, educating, and communicating in graphic, written and verbal forms, to a variety of clients, stakeholders, and design/technical subject matter experts.


This senior position supports the Director in strategic planning for the section and in the absence of the Director, represents the section in meetings with senior government or client officials.
