Introduction

Manitoba Economic Development, Investment, Trade and Natural Resources is seeking highly motivated individuals interested in filling the role of District Fire Ranger based out of Bissett and Berens River. There are two positions available, one in each location. Conditions of Employment: Must be legally entitled to work in Canada Must be physically capable of performing the duties of the position such as lifting, carrying and loading firefighting equipment, and working in adverse weather conditions. Must be willing and able to work weekends, overtime, and be deployed provincially, inter-provincially, or internationally as/when required. Must be able to obtain First Aid and CPR certification by a satisfactory date set by the employer. Must possess and maintain a valid full stage Manitoba Class 5 driver’s licence or equivalent (an Intermediate stage Manitoba Class 5 driver’s licence is acceptable on a temporary basis. Candidates are expected to attain and maintain a full stage Class 5 driver’s license on a permanent basis). Applicant will be required to provide a Drivers in Force letter or provincial equivalent before date of hire. Qualifications: Essential: Experience working outside and performing manual labour. Experience in the use and/or maintenance of small engine equipment, camping equipment, and power tools.  Strong verbal communication skills. Strong written communication skills  Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision. Desired: Experience in wildfire suppression, including use of standard firefighting equipment eg: shovel, axe, pulaski, Mk III fire pump, fire hose, chain saws. Experience conducting inventory control. Duties: Under the direction of the Area Fire Manager, Assistant Area Fire Manager, District Fire Ranger 3: The Fire Ranger 2 performs a variety of heavy and light manual duties associated with maintenance, preparedness and daily inventory control of the equipment used in the fire operation of the assigned Initial Attack Base; construction, maintenance, and works operations in the Bissett Fire Area; including janitorial duties and general maintenance of grounds and facilities, may be required to operate various small equipment and tools. The Fire Ranger 2 will be required to operate various equipment including specialized mowers, light motor vehicles, tractors. The Fire Ranger 2 may also be required to perform maintenance and minor repairs on equipment, as well as keep daily operating and maintenance records. The incumbent is responsible for variety of duties including: Ensures that the district fire equipment inventory, vehicles, supplies and caches are accounted for and maintained in serviceable condition to Provincial Standards. Participates in minor construction, repair and fire program infrastructure maintenance projects. Assist in organizing forest fire suppression support activities including, but not limited to: arranging for lodging, ordering food, commissary, supplies, and loading and unloading of support aircraft. Maintains detailed records of equipment inventories. Conducts work activities in accordance with Workplace Safety and Health Act Regulations.
