About Our Opportunity

The Park Carpenter works with the Maintenance Team to build and repair a variety of structures within the wildlife park, as well as providing carpentry support to the Provincial Parks system.

Primary Accountabilities

Estimating and procuring supplies required for maintenance tasks Construction and maintenance of outdoor furniture, buildings, roads, trails, enclosures, shelters, fences, signage and facility infrastructure Providing instruction on and the operation of machinery, equipment, hand tools and power tools Supervise small teams and projects Provide input into project design and maintenance programs Ensure codes, acts, regulations and policies are followed, where applicable

Secondary duties can include:

Assisting with animal care Assist with visitor experience events Travel to Provincial Parks

Qualifications and Experience

The successful candidate will have a Carpentry Diploma (2 year) plus 2 years experience in the construction field, or Carpentry Certificate (1 year) plus 3 years experience in the construction field, or High school equivalency plus 4 years experience in the construction field.

To be successful in this role, you should possess:

Above average knowledge of carpentry, systems maintenance and be familiar with the roles of the trades.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills; team player.

The willingness to work in adverse weather conditions.

Good physical health, including the ability to perform heavy lifting (at least 25 kg) regularly and frequently. You should also be able to climb, crouch, walk, stand, shovel, rake, and perform general labour to meet the physical demands of the position.

Good working knowledge of computers, especially email and data-entry.

A valid Nova Scotia Class 5 driver’s license (or equivalent)

Experience with snow plow operation and towing trailers.

A clean criminal background check

Assets include:

Red Seal in Carpentry

Previous experience as carpenter/maintainer at a zoo, wildlife park or similar

Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, WHMIS

Knowledge of indigenous wildlife, habitat, and environmental issues

Basic First Aid/CPR Certificate

We will assess the above qualifications using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), physical assessment, and reference checks.

Equivalency

Working Conditions

You will be on a schedule and must be able to work long days, some weekends, holidays, and evenings, and work independently with minimum supervision as well as in a team environment. Available to work irregular unscheduled hours, or be called back to work for storm closures or emergencies. Must be able to quickly adapt to changes in planned work on short notice and be comfortable performing a wide variety of daily tasks. Candidates selected for interviews may be required to submit a driver’s abstract.
