The Principal Engineer in Advanced Technologies is a senior-level role responsible for offering technical leadership, executing AESO's strategy, improving the organization's technical capacities through engineering talent development and mentorship, and fostering cross-functional collaboration to advance our business with a strong emphasis on both technical expertise and strategic direction.

In this position, the Principal Engineer, Advanced Technologies will provide strategic leadership and guidance to assess and cost - effectively integrate emergent technologies into the AESO, which includes developing and an adoption roadmap for strategic implementation into Alberta's interconnected electric system (AIES) with respect to modelling, planning and operations. You will work closely with the Chief Engineer, other Principal Engineers, people leaders as well as internal and external stakeholders as required on all matters related to the adoption of new technologies.

Accountabilities include but are not limited to:

  • Responsible for identifying emerging technologies to be used in Alberta's interconnected electric system (AIES), which includes having a a good depth in understanding the application, limitations, and performance parameters.
  • Developing use cases for the newer technologies for wider acceptance within the organization.
  • Educating the organization in general and leaders/decision makers in particular about the pros and cons of newer technologies.
  • Guide the development of technical models, operational parameters, costs etc.
  • Developing the technology roadmap in the AESO.
  • Providing ownership and support for the relevant reliability standards including participation in the Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC) audits.
  • Leads the development of the application of new legal & regulatory requirements, interprets and advises of changes to requirements and may represent the AESO in regulatory proceedings (present & defend), which could include deciding regulatory strategy and timing of applications with an awareness of external factors.
  • Responsible for updating and implementation of the AESO's reliability requirements roadmap which includes the following broad areas:
    • Inverter-based resources (IBRs)
    • Flexible AC transmission system (FACTS); HVDC; power electronics and controls
    • Large nuclear and small modular reactors (SMRs)
    • Carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS)
    • Hydrogen adoption, specifically on the generation side)
    • Energy storage: pumped hydro; compressed air; Li-ion/flow/other e-chemical batteries; superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES)
    • Demand Side Management (DSM)

What you'll bring to us:

  • B.Sc. or higher degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Professional Designation in Engineering (P.Eng.) and active membership with APEGA required.
  • Fifteen years or more of experience in the electric utility industry a broad set of electric power engineering domains: power plants and generation facilities, equipment design and specifications, generation development and energy storage.
  • Comprehensive understanding of electricity sector regulatory framework in Alberta, AESO Tariff, reliability standards, transmission facilities, and economic concepts.
  • Broad understanding of evolving technical concerns in the transmission and distribution domains, and the strategies implemented in other jurisdictions to manage electric system developments.
  • Experience in thermal or hydro power plants would be considered an asset.
  • Experience in grid enhancing technologies would be considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated leadership and understanding in emerging technologies.
