The Laboratory Safety Coordinator assists with the development, coordination, and implementation of laboratory safety policies and procedures for BC Cancer's Functional Imaging Department in compliance with health and safety regulatory standards for facilities producing positron-emitting radiopharmaceuticals (PER). Reporting to the Production Unit Manager, the Coordinator works in collaboration with Radiation Safety and Biosafety Officers, clinical and research PER production teams, and students in writing safety procedures, monitoring compliance of ongoing activities, implementing process improvements, taking necessary corrective actions as needed, and providing a variety of safety reports/records as required.

What you'll do

  • Assist the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) with the development and implementation of safety and security policies and procedures in accordance with current regulations regarding radiopharmaceutical laboratory working conditions and the use of biological, radioactive, and chemical materials and submits to manager for review and approval. Communicate safety information to staff, ensures safety standards are upheld, and maintains related records.
  • Oversee the use of radioactive materials through the management of radioactive materials licensing, radiation laboratory survey, and radioactive waste management programs. Respond to radiation safety emergencies and prepares and submit required reports.
  • Orientate new staff in safe and compliant handling of all dangerous materials, including hands- on radioactive decontamination.
  • Provide feedback to RSOs and Production Manager regarding personnel compliance and provides input regarding staff compliance of safety procedures, ensuring the departmental safety policies and procedures are followed, and provides information on the correct procedures when necessary.
  • Provide orientation to new staff and students regarding safety policies of the positron-emitting radiopharmaceutical (PER) production laboratory by following safety training program. Also monitor and coordinate required safety training updates for staff/students.

What you bring

Qualifications:

  • A level of education, training, and experience equivalent to a Bachelor's of Science degree in Chemistry or similar discipline
  • Three to five (3-5) years of recent, related experience in a similar role in a laboratory or Positron Emitting Radiopharmaceuticals (PER) lab environment.

  • Strong understanding of health and safety regulations pertaining to facilities producing PERs required ensuring compliance.
  • Awareness of and commitment to learning and understanding the Truth & Reconciliation Commission's 94 Calls to Action (2015), In Plain Sight Report (2020), BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019), and other related reports.
  • Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per TRC and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act
  • Knowledge of social, economic, political and historical realities impacting indigenous communities and familiarity with Indigenous Cultural Safety and anti-racism and accompanying reports (BC DRIPA, TRC, etc.).
  • Computer literacy with word processing, spreadsheet, and knowledge of developing databases.
  • Skills in CPR techniques
