RATE OF PAY: $23.18 to $30.50/hour (Rate subject to increases per collective agreement and position assignment)

ACCOUNTABILITY STATEMENT:
The Steward/Chef/Server will assist the department in meeting its operational and customer service expectations. The incumbent will be responsible for fulfilling vacancies in the department including station commissary, on-board crewing assignments such as chef, steward or server. The successful candidate is required to have the ability to work long hours and manage changing work assignments with little notice.

MAJOR DUTIES/ RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • The Steward/Chef/Server is responsible for supporting staffing requirements of the On-Board Services Department at Ontario Northland
  • Support department through commissary, assist with loading supplies onto the train
  • Plan and direct food preparation, cooking and serving activities on the Polar Bear Express train service between Cochrane and Moosonee
  • Ensure food meets quality standards
  • Estimate food requirements
  • Prepare and cook food on a regular basis
  • Clean and sanitize kitchen areas and dishes
  • Responsible for providing quality customer service including implementation of outlined procedures in the event of train delays and/or services disruption
  • As a spare board employee, must have the flexibility to be available 2 hours prior to train scheduled departure times
REQUIREMENTS:
  • Secondary School diploma or possess a General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
  • Three years cooking experience or two years of experience plus a culinary certificate
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
  • Proven ability to handle cash
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to perform different functions simultaneously
  • Strong teamwork skills
  • Smart serve certificate required
  • Must be available for on-call work
  • Committed to Company Health and Safety
  • Certificate in First Aid an asset
  • Preference will be given to qualified applicants who are fluent in English, French and Cree
  • Safe food handing certificate is an asset
  • Requires frequent travel on board train
  • Flexibility to work weekends and statutory holidays
  • Valid G driver's License
