Train Conductor

Conductors work alongside other team members to manage the movement of trains, rail cars, and locomotives in rail yards and on the tracks. They are responsible for tasks such as assembling trains, operating track switches, and handling emergency situations.

Responsibilities
  • Ensuring compliance with safety regulations and operational procedures
  • Receiving and providing instructions for rail car movement
  • Assembling and dismantling trains, and managing rail cars during transit
  • Observing and relaying signals for safe train operations
  • Operating track switches and inspecting train equipment
  • Making decisive actions in emergencies or unfamiliar locations
  • Communicating effectively with various parties via radio

Training
Newly hired individuals will undergo an intensive 11-week training program, including both classroom and field training sessions. CN offers competitive wages during this training period and covers expenses for transportation, accommodation, and meals in Winnipeg.
After training, candidates will embark on a minimum of 45 trips with an experienced crew to enhance their skills. Completion of the training program is mandatory, involving exams and physical assessments.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
  • Adhering to a flexible schedule in a 24/7 work setting
  • Lifting, carrying, and operating equipment up to 90 pounds
  • Working outdoors in various weather conditions
  • Performing physical tasks on rail cars and locomotives
  • Climbing ladders and walking for extended periods
  • Meeting medical and fitness standards

Other Requirements
  • Passing safety and rules exams
  • High school diploma
  • Obtaining Conductors Rule Card
  • Having a valid driver's license
  • Strong communication skills

Assets
  • Educational background or experience in rail operations
  • Previous work in similar environments
  • Possession of a valid driver's license

Relocation Incentive
The relocation package includes accommodations for up to three months and allowances for relocation expenses upon meeting specific milestones over a three-year period.

Candidate Pool
  • Applicants will enter CN's recruitment pool for future Conductor positions
  • Qualifying candidates will be contacted for training programs and job offers
  • Successful candidates remain in the pool for six months
