Job Summary

  • Candidate will be working as a Stroke Clinician who will assess and/or facilitate rehabilitation programs for stroke patients.

Organizational Status

  • The candidate will be hired under the Department of Physical Therapy, and will assess and/or facilitate rehabilitation programs for stroke patients. The candidate will report to Dr. Janice Eng and her research coordinators thru in-person meetings, emails, phone calls and Zoom meetings.

Work Performed

  • Candidate will assess and/or facilitate rehabilitation programs to patients who have had a stroke, either individually or in groups and performed in-person and/or remotely.
  • The candidate will assess the patient on a battery of clinical assessments and/or progress the stroke patients on an individual basis based on their activity level and capability.
  • Work may be completed through in-person meetings, thru emails, phone calls, Zoom meetings, and/or TeamViewer application (a remote access desktop software).

Consequence of Error/Judgement

  • The candidate will assess and/or facilitate a rehabilitation program to stroke patients according to study protocols, however, every patient is different and will require clinical-decision making to optimize the assessment or treatment. The candidate must be able to guide the stroke patients (and sometimes caregiver and family) appropriately, whether in-person, thru Zoom meetings and phone calls, and progress the patients to being as independent as their function allows. Inappropriate judgment could result in harm to the patients.
  • Inappropriate manners or instructions could result in patients and their families becoming frustrated, angry or seeking compensation.
  • Inattention to paperwork detail (errors on forms) and study protocol could jeopardize the results to clinical trials.

Supervision Received

  • The candidate will be supervised by Dr. Janice Eng, Professor, Department of Physical Therapy and her research coordinator. Since the candidate will need to work with vulnerable people who have had a stroke, the candidate must be fully competent and independent in their abilities to work with stroke patients.

Supervision Given

  • Candidate must have prior clinical experience in stroke rehabilitation, including stroke assessment, understanding the pathology of stroke, and working with stroke patients with disabilities. They must have prior experience in working and communicating with a multidisciplinary team.
  • Experience with research activities is an asset.
