Job Description

Under the direction of the Manager, Climate, Environment & Sustainability, the Senior Climate & Environment Specialist is responsible for implementing a strategic approach to environmental engagement and investment that is aligned with the Town's initiatives in meeting the challenges of climate change. The position works with numerous stakeholders (internal and external) to research, develop, propose, and implement policies, strategies and measures aimed at environmental sustainability and reducing the negative effects of climate change. Projects and initiatives include Community Energy Plan Updates, Conservation Demand Management Plan Updates and reporting under Ontario Regulation 507/18, Climate mitigation and adaptation plans, Green development standards, Comprehensive Stormwater Management Plan Updates, etc.

Job Requirements
  1. Post-secondary degree in Environmental Sustainability, Climate Change, Environmental Science, Bio-resource or Environmental Management, Climate and Environmental Change, Climate Change Science & Policy or related discipline, or the equivalent in combined education and experience. A proven ability to conduct independent study and research through experience is required.
  2. Progressive demonstrated experience and knowledge in environmental applied research or sustainability; Environmental Protection Act, Building Better Communities and Conserving Watersheds Act, Ontario Water Resources Act, Climate Change Mitigation and Low Carbon Economy Act, Drainage Act, Environmental Assessment Act, etc.
  3. Demonstrated thorough knowledge of analysis and research techniques in environmental sustainability preferably within climate change including methodology and tools used by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and building case studies and pilot projects.
  4. Ability to identify emerging trends and strategies to mitigate against the effects of climate change.
  5. Good organizational, project management, problem solving, report writing skills, and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  6. Solid interpersonal skills, ability to work with and obtain buy-in from various stakeholder groups.
  7. Technical expertise in completion of environmental projects related to climate change adaptability; and implementation of new technology and measures to mitigate the impact of climate change.
  8. Ability to exercise judgement and collaborate effectively with contractors, consultants, Town staff, and the general public.
  9. Proficient in the use of MS Office (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook). Working knowledge of computer software and techniques applicable to the areas of inventory databases, such as ArcGIS.
  10. Knowledge of applicable legislation, bylaws, legal proceedings and the ability to interpret legislation such as Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (MFIPPA), Occupational Health and Safety Act and Employment Standards Act and administrative bylaws.
  11. Class "G" Driver's license in good standing and reliable vehicle to use on corporate business.
