Job Summary: Casual Unit Clerk

We are seeking a Casual Unit Clerk to join our team in Abbotsford, B.C. The successful candidate will perform a variety of clerical duties related to the operation of a patient care area.

About the Job

The Casual Unit Clerk will act as a communication link for the assigned area, transcribing and processing physicians' orders, coordinating with other departments and facilities, and assembling and maintaining patient charts.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prioritize, process, coordinate and transcribe physicians' orders by copying information, completing required forms and/or entering information into the computer and distributing information.
  • Schedule, book and coordinate patient appointments by receiving appointment requests, arranging appropriate appointment dates and times, making follow-up appointments, and adjusting appointments as required.
  • Act as a communication link for the assigned area by contacting other facilities and departments, receiving patient's tests, and receiving visitors, providing information and directing to appropriate areas.
  • Assemble and maintain patient charts according to established procedures, transcribe patient data into applicable health record systems, and attach patient documents to charts.
  • Perform related clerical duties such as data entry, filing, compiling, preparing and maintaining statistics, delivering and picking up items, and arranging for and tracking equipment repairs.
  • Maintain timekeeping records for regular and casual staff and submit/enter to payroll systems as required.
  • Accept calls from nursing staff regarding illnesses and/or absence from work and communicate information received to nursing units and appropriate persons.
  • Maintain records on relief staff such as names, addresses, contact phone numbers, availability for work, suitable work areas, and hours worked.
Requirements

The successful candidate will have a Grade 12 education, medical terminology, and graduation of a recognized Nursing Unit Clerk program, plus one year of recent, related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to deal with others effectively.
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
  • Ability to keyboard at 40 wpm.
  • Ability to organize work.
  • Ability to operate related equipment.
  • Ability to utilize a variety of computer software applications.
