BC Children's Hospital's Emergency Department (ED) offers an unparalleled career experienced in pediatric emergency care. Every day, the sickest infants, children, and youth, are admitted through the ED, arriving from all over British Columbia. Our nursing staff are key members of our ED, caring for patients with both physical ailments and critical mental health conditions, caring for the whole person through assessments for physical, psychosocial, and mental health, collaborating with specialists and resources, performing emergency care/trauma care, and/or initiating treatment plans for crisis care through to post-discharge.

What you'll do

RNs and RPNs are vital team members within the BC Children's Hospital ED, and work together with a multidisciplinary team. Within the main ED, the RN assumes responsibility and accountability for provision of the pediatric patients, including performing emergency care for resuscitation and stabilization, and pediatric trauma nursing care. The ED uses the philosophy of Family-Centred Care and serves pediatric and adolescent patients and their families. RNs and RPNs in the Mental Health Emergency, work collaboratively as part of an inter-professional team and within an evidence-based trauma-informed model of care within the ED. High-level duties will vary related to area within the ED, but typically include:

  • Perform primary and secondary nursing assessment, nursing diagnosis, planning, implementation and evaluation or real and potential health problems in patients; collaborates with physicians and allied health as required, administers prescribed treatments and medications according to policy.
  • Perform triage and prioritization of patients utilizing advanced pediatric assessment skills according to Canadian Pediatric Triage Assessment Scale (PCTAS).
  • Provide nursing care to unique patient populations in crisis, including physical and sexual abuse, psychiatric problems, toxic ingestions, drug and alcohol intoxication.
  • Observe, monitor, evaluate and document patient progress, symptoms and behavioural changes. Perform a variety of health care interventions, utilizing nursing skills and medical equipment including therapeutic interventions using a variety of modalities.
  • Assess the patient's needs in collaboration with the emergency team during the intake procedure to determine patient disposition. Develop care and treatment plans with final dispositions authorized by the emergency department physician and/or consulting psychiatrist. Provide general and crisis counseling to patients and their families including brief crisis intervention, referrals to community resources/department social workers. Initiate and facilitate discharge planning and referrals.
  • Support the process of admission and transfer to inpatient units by supporting the needs of the patient and their family, providing information to the receiving unit and facilitating transition by sharing emergency treatment outcomes and care plans to the inpatient unit.

Qualifications

  • Current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse or Registered Psychiatric Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses & Midwives (BCCNM).
  • Emergency Department RNs require 1+ year of recent, related clinical experience in pediatrics or an Emergency Department setting; Emergency Nursing Pediatric course (ENPC)/Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)/Trauma Nursing Core Course preferred (TNCC)
  • Mental Health - Emergency Department RN/RPNs require 3 years' recent related experience working with children, adolescents and families on an inpatient child/adolescent mental health unit including 1 year's recent related experience in a crisis or emergency psychiatry setting, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience; current CPR and CPI training.

Skills & Knowledge

  • Works as a member of a multidisciplinary care team, functioning as a nursing resource and making decisions both in an independent and consultative manner in a clinical setting.
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; with ability to relate effectively and establish rapport with psychotic and crisis-prone adolescents, children and their families.
  • Mental Health roles only: comprehensive knowledge of emergency triage procedures, mental health assessment, substance use, psychopharmacology in children, general counseling principles and interview techniques, crisis theory, trauma-informed care, abnormal psychology, de-escalation techniques and knowledge of community resources; skills in individual, family, and group therapy.
  • Awareness of and commitment to learning and understanding the Truth & Reconciliation Commission's 94 Calls to Action (2015), In Plain Site Report (2020), BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019), and other related reports.
  • Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per TRC and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act
