Seeking a Home Helper to provide homemaking services to individuals and families in their homes, promoting independence and well-being.

Employment Status: Permanent Part-time (0.4 FTE)
Program Name: Assisted Living
Work Schedule: Days, Evenings, Weekends
Bi-Weekly Hours: 30
On-Call: No

The Home Helper collaborates with the healthcare team to meet the needs of individuals, providing light housekeeping, meal preparation, and companionship. Key responsibilities include:

  • Performing light housekeeping tasks, such as dusting, cleaning, and laundry
  • Preparing meals and completing environmental risk assessments
  • Providing companionship and conversation to clients
  • Providing medication reminders and appointment reminders
  • Observing and evaluating clients' homes and personal situations
  • Contributing to the development of care plans with the Coordinator
  • Communicating with healthcare team members regarding clients' needs
  • Adhering to VON standards and core values

Common responsibilities include:

  • Promoting VON's goals and values as an integrated community care provider
  • Promoting a safe and healthy workplace
  • Abiding by VON policies and work practices
  • Abiding by confidentiality and protection of personal information policies
  • Working collaboratively with other staff in a team approach

External and internal relationships include:

  • Engaging with clients, family members, and Home Support Coordinators

Education, designations, and experience required:

  • High school graduate
  • 2-3 years' experience working with children, seniors, and people with disabilities
  • Post-secondary school education preferred
  • Household management or professional customer service experience preferred
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification preferred
  • Personal Support Worker or Health Care Aide certification an asset

Skill requirements include:

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Good assessment skills
  • Awareness of community resources
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team

Other requirements include:

  • Personal vehicle and valid driver's license
  • Willingness to travel regularly and occasionally overnight
  • Current and original copy of a satisfactory Criminal Records Check
  • Vulnerable Sector Search and/or Child Abuse Registry Check may be required
  • Use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) may be required

Work conditions and physical capabilities include:

  • Attention to detail
  • Lift and carry using appropriate lifting techniques
  • Bend, push, pull, grip, reach, kneel, crouch using good body mechanics
  • Walk, sit, stand, climb stairs
