Job Summary
This individual is a member of the Vaccine Evaluation Center (VEC) whose role is to help plan, coordinate, implement, and evaluate the ongoing needs of the data scrutineering team. This involves taking a lead role in overseeing their training and communicating study needs to the management team.
Organizational Status
Reports to the Data Coordinator, Data Manager and/or Investigator of the study.
Work Performed
Responsibilities include:
- Training and supervising data scrutineering staff to facilitate a thorough medical review of data collected and transcribed by monitors from hospital charts across multiple sites across Canada. This includes overseeing level A scrutineering staff tasks, answering questions from scrutineering staff, creating training manuals, and directly training scrutineering staff.
- Provide advice and guidance to study study staff conducting specialized medical coding per established project standards on reported health conditions; this requires a high level of medical knowledge and decision making.
- Troubleshooting clinical questions or problems that impact the study and providing leadership in helping to resolve those questions
- Assisting in planning and organizing study tasks as they relate to data scrutineering
- Creating workload projections to estimate how much time is needed to complete projects and ensuring scheduling staff are up-to-date on study needs.
- Exercising judgment and discretion to provide leadership and resolve problems.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Errors in judgement will jeopardize database integrity, yield inaccurate results and potentially limit the research endeavours of approximately 20 Investigators involved with the study. Work will not be reviewed often and so must remain consistent and accurate. Errors in judgement can result in significant damage to the Vaccine Evaluation Center's academic reputation as a centre of excellence, nationally and internationally.
Supervision Received
Works under minimal supervision, receiving general directions and guidelines from project data coordinator/manager and the investigator(s) as part of the specified project team for study related issues. The individual is expected to know the standard tasks that need to be done for the project and carry them out independently, reporting progress to the data or investigator but with limited oversight.
Supervision Given
Effectively trains and helps allocate work to subordinate data scrutineering staff; reviews work progress to ensure conformity to established principles and procedures
Minimum Qualifications
- Research Nurse: Registered Nurse with BCCNP plus three years of nursing and administrative experience. Clinical Associate: Undergraduate degree in Nursing and Registered Nurse with BCCNP, plus at least two years of experience in a clinical position. Nurse Practitioner Clinical Associate: Postgraduate degree in Nursing and Registered Nurse with BCCNP, plus two years of experience in primary care NP practice or a combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Ability to deal effectively with a diversity of people. Ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail. Ability to work effectively independently and in a team environment. Ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines. Previous supervisory experience is an asset. Must have extensive understanding of vaccines and their appropriate use. Experience using SAS Analytics Software and prior experience in research and with research databases are assets.
