Potato Development Specialist

The Department of Agriculture, Aquaculture and Fisheries is seeking an individual to join the Sector Development - Potato Branch as a Potato Development Specialist, within the northwest region, located in Wicklow or Grand Falls.

As a member of the Potato Development Centre team and reporting to the Director, the successful candidate will be responsible for providing technical advisory services and technology transfer to producers, industry, and private stakeholders, to improve competitiveness and sustainability, with emphasis on potatoes and associated rotational crops. This position is responsible for assisting with building positive working relationships between producers and government and establishing and maintaining positive working relationships with clients and stakeholders. Duties also include assisting with industry and sector development, including assisting producers with program delivery, funding applications, and project applications under the Enabling Agricultural Research and Innovation (EARI) Program and the Canadian Agricultural Partnership (CAP) Program. Responsibilities include keeping current on new initiatives, research and technologies; participating as a member of sector teams involved in planning, implementing and participating in policy development, strategic and innovative research and monitoring; assisting producers with on-farm demonstrations and agronomy trials to improve techniques and practices; and attending industry and producer meetings and information sessions. Other related duties may be assigned as required.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidate will possess the following:

  • A Master's degree in Science with specialization in agriculture, or a related field; and a minimum of eight (8) years of directly related work experience, including a minimum of three (3) years of experience in potato development.

OR

  • A Bachelor's degree in Science with specialization in agriculture, or a related field; and a minimum of ten (10) years of directly related work experience; including a minimum of three (3) years of experience in potato development.

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

NOTE: In the event that this competition poses difficulties in recruiting a qualified candidate, a covering off appointment at a lower level may be made. In that case, candidates with less than the required related years of experience may also be considered.

The successful candidate must be eligible for membership in the New Brunswick Institute of Agrologists, and membership must be attained within six (6) months of appointment.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be prepared to: travel within the regional area, as required, and to other areas of New Brunswick on occasion; work in agricultural environments which may include a variety of terrain and weather conditions; possess a valid class 5 driver licence as issued by the Province of New Brunswick, or equivalent.

SALARY: $65,801.84 to $90,065.56 per annum
