We are looking for a Mechanical Technologist, Engine Test Facility Operations to support our Aerospace Research Centre. The incumbent will be part of the Mechanical Facility Operations team serving the Gas Turbine Lab's (GTL) Engine Research Facilities. The Mechanical Technologist would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity.

If you would like to help us create and improve test facilities for aircraft engines please apply You would support the conduct of gas turbine testing, sustainable propulsion research, and facility maintenance and upgrades.

Our technologists are expected to:

  • Independently operate test equipment and facilities, including facility data acquisition and control systems and computers;
  • Work with project managers and designers to ensure successful test preparation and execution, including selection and modification of equipment, and development of test instructions;
  • Independently perform fabrication of test apparatus and experimental rigs;
  • Perform troubleshooting of test facilities and equipment;
  • Plan and conduct routine maintenance and repair; and
  • Specify and complete purchases.

Our mechanical technologists also sometimes design basic mechanical fixtures and configure facility and test set-ups for specific tests.

Education

College diploma in a Mechanical Engineering or Aircraft Technology program or related field or equivalent combination of work related experience, training and education.

Experience
  • Significant* experience with the safe operation and maintenance of facilities and equipment in a test facility, laboratory or plant environment, preferably with gas turbines or at industrial scale; and
  • Significant* experience with safe operation of hand and power tools and/or material handling equipment.

Assets:

  • Aviation or gas turbine operation experience, whether test, civilian operations, or military;
  • Experience in design and using CAD software packages;
  • Experience with machine shop tools and wood shop tools;
  • Experience working with and supervising outside contractors to perform work;
  • Experience in coordinating maintenance;
  • Experience with electric/pneumatic valves and electronics;
  • Experience assembling industrial equipment;
  • Experience working at heights and the use of the related equipment;
  • Experience with fork lift;
  • Experience with overhead cranes;
  • Experience with methods and techniques related to preparing for, conducting, documenting and analyzing experiments/tests.

*Significant refers to between 2 to 6 years of experience.

Technical Competencies
  • Ability to logically analyze and discuss technical issues, troubleshoot and solve problems relating to gas turbine test facilities;
  • Ability to assemble and disassemble mechanical installations, including tool use;
  • Basic knowledge of fundamentals of fluid mechanics and thermodynamics;
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings, process diagrams and instrumentation diagrams;
  • Knowledge of basic safety considerations relevant to a gas turbine test cell; and
  • Ability to write technical documents such as: safety protocols, operating procedures or test reports.

Compensation

From $58,445 to $80,040 per annum.
