Your Contribution to NRSI
NRSI is looking for two (2) locally-situated, motivated, and independent individuals to conduct field monitoring activities at operating solar energy facilities in the Edmonton area, primarily consisting of wildlife mortality searches and/or the placement of bird test carcasses. These positions provide an opportunity to gain experience in visual bird identification, to implement scientific methods, and to collect and analyze data employing a high attention to detail. The primary duties and responsibilities for this role include:
  • Taking well-organized and detailed field notes;
  • Maintaining regular communication about the assigned field work with project managers, fellow field personnel, and clients as necessary;
  • Conducting searches according to a strict schedule and safely collecting and handling bird carcasses; and
  • Occasional assistance with other field- or office-related tasks.
Your Education:
  • A degree or diploma in Biology, Environmental Sciences or a related field.
  • Individuals currently enrolled in such programs will also be considered.
Requirements:
  • A valid driver's license and over 18 years old in order to drive a rental vehicle.
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR Certification.
  • Willing & able to work under inclement weather, in a variety of environmental and vegetation conditions, for long hours, and occasionally on holidays or weekends.
  • Physically fit in order to walk for several hours each day in potentially challenging terrain.
  • Demonstrated interest in wildlife and the environment, including the desire to pursue a career in this field.
  • A good work ethic and positive attitude, dependability, flexibility, and excellent communication.
  • Ability to work independently on a regular basis.
  • Demonstrated accuracy and attention to detail, including the maintenance of well-organized and detailed field notes.
Assets:
  • Experience in the identification of birds by sight.
  • Proficiency with simple navigation, experience using handheld GPS units.
  • Experience surveying for wildlife and/or conducting soil assessments, vegetation inventories, or delineating vegetation communities using standard survey protocols.
  • A reliable personal vehicle insured for work purposes (authorized mileage will be reimbursed).
