Job Summary
The MR Technologist, BCCH MRI Research Facility, will be responsible for scanning research and clinical subjects at the BCCH MRI Research Facility.
This is a casual, on-call hourly position, with availability fluctuating weekly, including some Saturdays and evenings. This position may also provide coverage for leaves up to eight weeks in length.
MRI Research Facility at BC Children's Hospital is a standard accredited MR imaging facility where care and attention to the risk of high field strength magnetic fields are required.
Organizational Status
The successful candidate as MRI Technologist, BCCH MRI Research Facility, will report to the Head MRI Technologist, BCCH MRI Research Facility, who in turn reports to the Director of the BCCH MRI Research Facility.
Work Performed
- Performs clinical and research MRI examinations in accordance with departmental policies and research protocols, while observing MR safety practices and providing excellent patient care.
- Reviews requisitions and protocol sheets, ensuring accuracy of information, and prepares for specific MR examinations. Operates a wide variety of computerized equipment to acquire images and monitor patient safety and equipment performance. Performs post-processing and archiving of acquired images as per protocol.
- Answers scheduling and MR safety inquiries.
- Educates patients/families regarding MR examination to be performed. Demonstrates professional behavior/conduct in all interactions; fosters teamwork, efficient use of resources and quality patient outcomes.
- Performs and evaluates equipment quality control measurements. Investigates, troubleshoots and notifies appropriate personnel to maintain equipment performance.
- Performs routine facility monitoring and image quality reviews.
- Maintains a safe environment for patients, personnel, and visitors. Adheres to safety policies.
- Accountable for the ethical, legal, and professional responsibilities related to the medical imaging and research practices. This includes maintaining confidentiality of all work information.
- Assures the efficient operation of workflow of the department. Monitors and maintains an adequate inventory of supplies and materials to ensure non-interruption of services.
- Stays up-to-date on mandatory training.
- Demonstrates competence in performing prescribed invasive/interventional procedures in accordance with established policies, if applicable.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Exercises professional judgment in working with subjects requiring MR Imaging and research teams. Any deviation from this will result in a negative impact to patients, research projects, and/or the facility.
Supervision Received
The successful candidate as MRI Technologist, BCCH MRI Research Facility, will report to the Head MRI Technologist, BCCH MRI Research Facility, who in turn reports to the Director of the BCCH MRI Research Facility.
Supervision Given
Provides direction to both MR and non-MR personnel in regards to MRI and patient safety and ensures proper operation of equipment within scope of practice.
Minimum Qualifications
- Certification with CAMRT in MRI.
- Current CPR certification.
- Physical ability to perform the duties of this position

Preferred Qualifications
- At least 3 years' experience working in MRI, including in research settings, preferred.
- At least 3 years' experience working with children in a pediatric hospital setting.
- At least 3 years' experience working in MR in a pediatric hospital setting.
- Previous 3T GE Scanner experience.
- Demonstrated knowledge of RIS and PACS.
- Ability to analyze and interpret data, determine implications, and provide recommendations.
- Ability to recognize potentially dangerous situations and take appropriate action.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment.
- Ability to exercise tact and discretion.
