Ministry of Health, Fraser Health is looking to hire Health Care Support Workers (HCSW) and support them in becoming qualified to be registered as a Community Health Worker through the Health Careers Access Program (HCAP). What will HCAP offer you?

As a HCSW with Acute Care, you will alternate between completing the Health Care Assistant program at an assigned post secondary school and receive on the job experience. During the education sessions, you will be paid a weekly stipend and while working you would receive an hourly rate. The costs associated with your registration, tuition/education, and acquiring food safe, First Aid and English language equivalency testing will all be covered.

The HCAP Program within Acute Care involves a 2-2.5 year commitment, and applicants are required to have full availability Monday through Sunday, including availability for morning, evening and weekend shifts. The Education piece of this program will consist of a 12-18 month duration and upon Graduation, students are required to fulfill the Return of Service Agreement for 12 months.

Upon graduating from the Health Care Aide (HCA) training program, you will be eligible to register with the BC Care Aide & Community Health Worker Registry and seek employment as a qualified Community Health Worker.

This program is eligible to Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents;

As a Health Care Support Worker you will:

  • Work under the direction of a Registered Nurse or another regulated healthcare professional.
  • Perform a variety of non-direct and/or non-clinical healthcare supports to clients and families in home settings in accordance with the established care plan and safety requirements.

Detailed Overview

Under the direction of a Registered Nurse or another regulated healthcare professional, performs a variety of non-direct and/or non-clinical healthcare supports to patients, clients, families, and/or visitors in acute settings in accordance with the established care plan and safety requirements.
Responsibilities

  1. Participates as an integral member of a healthcare delivery team to provide a variety of non-direct and/or non-clinical healthcare supports to patients, clients, families and/or visitors to meet established needs.
  2. Establishes rapport with patients, clients, and families, and assists in promoting physical, emotional, cultural, social, and spiritual well-being. Observes patients and clients, and their environments, to identify and reports unsafe conditions, behavioral and/or physical changes to designated supervisor.
  3. Assists with mealtime activities; sets up and collects meal trays, assists with limited food preparation such as heating prepared food, making tea, coffee, toast, etc. where patients, clients require support.
  4. Provides assistance in setting up supplies and equipment, assists with transporting patients, clients to designated areas, and provides support to patients, clients where required.
  5. Performs housekeeping duties such as cleaning furniture and fixtures, emptying waste containers, tidying patient areas, and stripping and making beds where required.
  6. Greets visitors and others in accordance with established safety, security and infection control procedures and guidelines; provides information and/or redirects to appropriate person or area, where required.
  7. Checks and restocks supplies and carts in clinical areas and patient rooms. Retrieves equipment/supplies for clinical staff as required and assists in taking inventory.
  8. Completes and maintains related records electronically, or using documents such as inter-shift communication books, daily log sheets and progress reports related to non-direct and/or non-clinical healthcare activities.
  9. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Education and Experience

Grade 10, including successful completion of English 10 or equivalency.
