The Department of Indigenous Affairs (DIA) portfolio is complex and multifaceted. It is the responsibility of the Department to create an environment of reconciliation in which meaningful relationships and negotiations between the Province and First Nations lead to the re-affirmation and implementation of Aboriginal and treaty rights.

Reporting to a First Nations Relations Manager within the Initiatives and Advisory Services Branch, the First Nations Relations Advisor will be part of a team responsible for leading the development, implementation and evaluation of social and economic policies, programs and initiatives involving First Nations.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Providing advice on new policy issues/projects and participating in the development of policies, guidelines and tools that support the initiatives intake process and advisory process and builds capacity within the provincial government.
  • Increasing departments' and agencies' awareness of the Government of New Brunswick's (GNB) legal responsibilities, current GNB/First Nations relations, and reconciliation opportunities.
  • Building and maintaining positive relationships with First Nations, rightsholders and stakeholders.
  • Serving as a liaison between departments/agencies, First Nation communities or organizations and the federal government on strategic initiatives.
  • Supporting the Province's position on committees and at meetings with the federal government and First Nation communities or organizations.

Essential Qualifications: Post-secondary degree in Social Sciences, Public Administration, Business Administration, Economics, Law or another related discipline and a minimum of five (5) years of related experience, or a 2 year diploma in a related discipline and a minimum of seven (7) years of related experience, including:

  • Experience in relationship development
  • Experience communicating complex information to decision makers
  • Experience advising and interacting with program managers, subject matter experts and senior leadership
  • Experience working with external stakeholders.

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

Some positions require written and spoken competence in French and English. Others will require written and spoken competence in English. Please state your language capability.

Asset Qualifications: Preference may be given to those candidates that have:

  • Experience working in a provincial or federal (Canada) government setting;
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities or organizations; or
  • Experience in facilitation and/or mediation.

Salary: $2,450 to $3,422 bi-weekly
