We are looking for a Technical Officer, Electrical Standards to support our Metrology Research Centre. The Technical Officer would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity.

The Technical Officer provides technical (electrical, electronic, computer, mechanical, organizational, logistical and other) support, and systems oversight in the day-to-day operations of the Electrical Standards Team.

We are looking for a hands-on person that will be proficient in a physics lab setting. The Technical Officer will divide their time between performing calibration services for internal and external clients and supporting the Electrical Standards Team's research and development activities.

The Technical Officer will:

  • Set up and troubleshoot experiments, experimental equipment and calibration apparatus;
  • Develop computer interfacing and programs to communicate with electronic equipment;
  • Work with clients to arrange and schedule calibration services;
  • Calibrate internal and external client equipment;
  • Acquire and analyse data in detail, report results and keep records;
  • Work with other team members to schedule equipment maintenance and procedure validation;
  • Order supplies and equipment from manufacturers for team members;
  • Help design, construct and maintain advanced, custom electronic and mechanical equipment for scientific apparatus;
  • Conduct internal audits and external assessments for colleagues or NRC clients.

Education

A Technical College diploma or Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, physics, or closely related field. An equivalent combination of experience and education may also be considered.

Experience
  • Experience working in a laboratory setting and with equipment found in physics labs, such as oscilloscopes, power supplies, data acquisition systems, vacuum systems, etc.;
  • Experience in general programming and computer interfacing and control of instruments by computer (for instance with C++, LabVIEW, Visual Basic or Python);
  • Experience making precision electrical measurements;
  • Experience in electronics including design, layout, part specification, construction, testing and troubleshooting for digital and analog electronics;
  • Experience in managing day-to-day laboratory operations including infrastructure support and preventative maintenance, home-built and commercial equipment upgrades, testing and troubleshooting;
  • Experience with small power tools and workshop equipment; and
  • Experience with quality systems is an asset (for example ISO

Candidates will be assessed on the basis of the following criteria:

Technical Competencies
  • Knowledge of data acquisition systems and components;
  • Knowledge of laboratory measurement devices;
  • Knowledge related to performing accurate electrical measurements;
  • Knowledge of electrical and electronics engineering principles;
  • Knowledge of scientific programming languages on Windows platforms for applications relating to automating measurement systems, data acquisition and analysis;
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel) and ability to perform data analysis and write calibration reports using such software;
  • Ability to perform electrical and mechanical troubleshooting, soldering (including surface mount), and machining;
  • Ability to work safely with high voltage electrical equipment;
  • Ability to design, construct and maintain advanced equipment;
  • Ability to pay attention to detail, use patience and perseverance, and repeat all steps as required while investigating and validating instrumentation to achieve the highest quality measurements; and
  • Basic knowledge of quality-system managed work environment would be considered an asset.

Compensation

From $58,445 to $80,040 per annum.
